Giants party this Sunday- what to serve?

We wanted to do a 3ft Chicken/mozz/pesto/red peppers sub from our local pizza place but it's $75 and a bit steep for our budget. Toyed with the idea of burgers/sausages but it's supposed to be in the 30's.

15-20 adults, 2pm on Sunday, what would you serve as a main course for a football party that isn't going to break the bank? I'm already doing some apps but need something substantial to feed people!

Re: Giants party this Sunday- what to serve?

  • Our housewarming party was on the same day as a Giants game. In addition to some hot appetizers and chips/dip-type things, I made a big pot of chili with a skillet of homemade cornbread (plus I put out sour cream and shredded Cheddar in bowls on the side), and a pulled pork shoulder in the crockpot with a package of potato rolls so people could make sandwiches

Both the chili and the pork were nearly gone by the end of the day. It was really easy to make all of this stuff and not very expensive.

  • I second chili. Mmmmmmmm.

  • That sandwich sounds delicious!  Could you possibly make them yourself?  Grill up a bunch of chicken, slice fresh mozz, buy or make pesto and red peppers, and make sandwiches in the morning?

  • This recipes yields a lot. I've had parties and served it with nacho chips and nacho toppings (cheese, sour cream, salsa, guacamole). People build their own. It's a big hit and people ask me to bring it:

      Crockpot Chicken Tacos

3 Large Chicken Breasts (I use frozen ones)
    2 cans black beans, drained
    1 can red beans, drained
Salsa (1-2 cups, i would guess)
    1/2-1 tbsp Cumin
    3-4 tbsp Chili Powder
    1/2 tbsp black pepper
    Frozen corn (optional)

Put chicken in the crockpot and all other ingredients on top of it. Cook on low for 3-5 hours until you can shred the chicken.

  • I was also going to suggest chili (do a build your own taco bar if you want) and/or pulled pork.  beef stew is another option...or baked ziti.

I have a bunch of recipes in my blog - link in siggy if interested.

  • Chili and cornbread w all the fixins sounds good. or a cold cut/sandwich platter. We did chicken cutlet/flank steak sandwiches last time we had a football party. Buffalo chicken dip is a good one. Lots of dips and frozen orderves
  • Pulled pork (set up a "slider" bar), various dips (taco dip, buffalo chicken dip, salsa), chips, hot dogs (you can do a crock pot of chili to go with the hot dogs, too)

  • What about pulled pork in the crockpot? Just serve with little rolls. I like the chili idea too. Or a big baked ziti is easy and crowd pleaser.

  • For a huge dinner I did on vacation this summer I did chili with fixings and with it I did a green salad, mac n cheese & hotdogs. So they could use the chili how ever they wanted and it was so yummy! Also kept lots of dietary concerns happy

I have been planning my menu since the car ride home from the game on Sunday We are having ham and cheese sliders baked in the oven (annie's eats), home made fries and the rest I havent decided on yet....its only the 4 of us, and my kids arent too adventurous.

  • Baked ziti is easy, cheap & can be made ahead of time.  I'm not a bug chili fan myself.

  • First thing that came to mind was chili.  Or ribs?  Or you could do lasagna

  • Thank you for all the great suggestions- I'm going to discuss with the DH and I'll let you know what we end up making!
