Buying Carpet

Any recs for carpet installation? We had Empire out today and I feel like their price was a little high though they swear up and down they are the cheapest. I was also a little put off by the sales pitch. We're almost done finishing our basement and have the money for carpet thanks to the insurance deal being taken care of but I still don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it.

Re: Buying Carpet

  • In our old house we bought and installed with Lowes. We were pretty happy and we at least compared between Lowes and HD for prices.

  • We like the Martha Stewart collection at Home Depot - we have it in our basement. And Home Depot is offering 10% off right now. We're finally getting our carpet replaced upstairs.

  • I used Carpet Exchange -- the one on College south of Harmony.  They did an OK job.  I was not happy with the vinyl installation at all.  I had a few issues with the carpet installation.

It was pretty cheap though, so there was that.  We had the entire house done and they had to move appliances and furniture.  Some of the furniture got broken and some walls got damaged.  After complaining, they came back out and fixed the walls -- we just had to touch up the spots with paint.  If you're just doing the basement, they might do a better job.  Especially if there is no furniture to move.

I would absolutely never get vinyl done there again though (the carpet installers were not the same people as the vinyl installers).

  • We actually bought and installed through Carpet Exchange, and they were really reasonable and the quality is good.

  • We looked at Lowe's, Carpet Mill and Carpet Exchange today and I really liked one at Carpet Exchange. My only concern is that it's a polyester and I guess the Nylon is more resilient. We have the people who did carpet in all of my families houses calling tomorrow to set up an appointment and we'll go form there. We have friends that used CE and were happy as well so I hope it was just a fluke for you C! Thanks for the input!
