I Need Nursery Inspiration

All the cute stuff I liked before was neutral or boyish. I'm not a huge fan of pink, I like purple more. But apparently if you like purple you're choices are butterflies or Hello Kitty. Point me in the direction of your favorite website/inspiration/pictures of your own nursery.

Did you go all out with everything matching?

Will my little girl hate me for choosing something that leans neutral? As a result will I be forced to live in a land of pink princesses for the rest of my life?

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz

    So this is out then?

  • Obviously I went all neutral. but, even if I had known what he was, I would have gone with the same color palette.

I wanted bright bold and warm colors.

I think the best thing is to choose your color palette and then find things to go with it.

For our bedding, we went with a solid sheet and then I got tons of different blankets and such so I never bought any bedding sets.

In fact, I used mostly solid colors for everything, no real patterns in our nursery.

All of my decorations came from places like etsy and ikea.

I never really spent a lot of time looking on baby nursery specific sites because the stuff there was always dreadul, overpriced, overpatterned, etc

  • Are you being sarcastic, or do you actually feel obliged to do a nursery in pink and/or purple?
    image
  • I took the same approach as Winged did but I just picked a robot theme.  I bought the nursery furniture from Ikea in blue and then went from there and added other pops of color in the greens and lighter blues. We also got solid sheets as well as a few patterned ones with no coordinating sets.  I think a lot of the sheets sets I bought from Target.  I recommend not getting the Target/Circo cover for the changing pad, however.  The one I got from BRU is like silky looking and you can just wipe a stray spray right up in a pinch.

  • I went looking for you and I hate to say it but you're right about the butterflies.

I happened across this nursery, and omg, forget babies, I want to make it my own bedroom:

  • I don't really like baby stuff.  I'm 99% sure we're going to do a map themed nursery, and that was the plan for a boy or a girl.  Basically I'm looking for a really cool globe that will sit on the dresser/changing table.  I'm going to use the colors in the globe to define the color palette for the room.  Since all of our family, and lots of our friends live far away, we're going to paint a mural of a map on one of the walls, and hang pictures of people where they live.  Then I'm just going to look for solid color bedding separates/drapes/rug to fit the color scheme.  I'm not planning on using a bumper or quilt, so a bedding set seems silly.

  • I love the one fallin posted. I wanted soft and neutral with hints of pink for Jo. If you're my facebook friend the photos are on there if you wanna look.

For the next one I'm going brighter and bolder.

No, I don't actually feel obliged to stick to a particular color scheme. Although, I'm sure my MIL will want to know what was the point of finding out if we just go with a neutral theme anyway. It was more of a commentary on the options that are widely available in stores. There are 4 Neutral options, 8 Boy options, and 12 girl options, 11 of which are pink. Now if I was a creative crafty type or had an unlimited budget, I'd have no problem decorating a nursery.

Krisdi-I like Delilah's nursery. A lot of the neutral sets I like are monkeys and other animals.

Boxer-Your nursery sounds like fun. Can't wait to see it.

  • I love Boxer's idea.

Bedding sets are useless. Our blanket wound up as a wall hanging.

  • Don't bother with bedding sets.

We just go for color.  When Andy was a baby, his walls were bright green, curtains were orange, and then there were just pops of other colors everywhere, one of which was purple (for shame, I know).

  • Agree.  Don't get too wrapped up in a theme.  Shop for colors, and then you can do whatever you want with wall art.

I know you said no pink, but I did see this on sale at Gilt, and I think it would be easy to build on without getting obnoxiously pink and girly:

  • I'm not a pink person either.  I did DD's nursery in green and orange (the green was already on the walls; I am lazy).  She's never complained, and she's a fairly girly girl as a 3 year old.

I like Fallin's pic with the dark grey walls, too, though.  You'd think that color would be too somber, but I saw a nursery like this when we were house hunting (with orange as the accent color), and it was awesome.

  • Lindsay's cupcake link is super cute.  From that page, this is fun and girly but not pinky, if you aren't set on purple:

I know.  I keep wondering exactly how that was achieved.

It reminds me of the condition of my basement.  Except no one would want to take a picture of my basement.

    I love this one.

I also love the purple polka dots one Lindsay posted.

  • I love the room Fallin posted -- so unique.

We did not buy any sets, but just a bunch of sheets in solids and stripes.  The room was yellow, the decorations were classic Pooh, and the sheets were all greens and yellows until I bought a bunch of sheets with cars and surfboards last year.

We never had a bumper, and I doubt we would have used a blanket or quilt that came with a crib bedding set. If you have a baby who spits up at night or soaks through diapers you'll be changing a lot of sheets and won't be all matchy-matchy anyway.

  • Irish, I always use the Rate My Space pages for inspiration when decorating a room. You can sort by highest rated, top viewed, and I think you can search tags if you have something more specific in mind.

I painted my daughter's room blue (< - - - itching to drop some Adam Sandler quotes here) because I want her to be a lesbian. That's the best part about being a parent; complete control of my children's destiny. Through design. And paint. And lots and lots of vaganus guilt.
  • There are some amazingly cute rugs on Rue La La right now:

  • I also have a girl in a blue room. I have been told she lifts up her shirt and beats her chest at other children like an ape, and I'm pretty sure that's why.

  • I couldn't talk my H out of a set, so we went with Skip Hop.  Nothing is overly gendered.

  • I did a similar theme and color scheme to krisdi, and we were also team green.  Our animals were more barnyard though, not jungle.  The walls are a light green, the furniture either natural or white (it doesn't match, the horror!) and the art is pretty bright.  MIL did some art for us and brought some things back from a trip to Central America too, so we used all of that to keep it from looking too boring.

  • I HAVE TO HAVE THAT BALLOON RUG.

I'm doing a vintage toy/schoolhouse theme. I have alphabet flashcards for a border and a big blackboard to hang over the dresser. I still have not picked a wall color, which sucks because the painter is coming tomorrow.

I just bought this quilt, skirt, and window treatment today, and I got red and brown crib sheets to go with it. It's super neutral, but I couldn't find anything that fit my theme, so I just went with something that would fade into the background.

I love that balloon rug. Thanks to SB's pinterest I'm now obsessed with vintage hot air balloons.

  • I love that cream pinwheel rug. And not just for a nursery either.  If I wasn't losing my office to nursery-based house rearranging I would buy it.

  • I bought it. I couldn't resist. They were out of the 5x7, which would have been the perfect size, so I got the 4x6, which should still work just fine. The room itself is only about 11x13.
