mini trip recommendations?
I need to get away to recharge, but don't have alot of money. I've been to Duluth so I'm hoping to go elsewhere. I'm looking for the following: 3-5 days max, within 5-6 hours driving distance, scenic, some hiking paths or trails, kitchenette would be nice but not required, resorts are ok, and I'm hoping to go in May or June. TIA
Re: mini trip recommendations?
Watch Crowd Cut/Groupon/etc for vouchers to various places in MN/WI. We recently got one to the Gunflint Lodge and are going next month. (They are a bit spendy even with a voucher, but it fills your 5-6hr drive, scenic, hiking, and kitchenette requirements.)
We went to Gunflint in October (also with crowd cut deal) and had a great time. It's a bit of a hike up there, but there's a lot of things to do that don't cost any additional money: tons of hiking trails, canoes, boats, feeding the ducks, etc). There's also horseback riding, but that costs extra, depending on the deal you get (It was fun though). We spent hours just sitting and reading down by the lake, playing board games, walking around, taking pictures, and talking. We also heard some wolves howling one night.
The cabins all have kitchens and gas grills, so you can pack your own food to bring up (the nearest town is an hour away so plan ahead). There is also a pretty decent restaurant on site, but it can be a little pricey ($15ish for a meal).
DH is totally techy and being out of cell phone range forced him to really relax and unwind. I highly recommend it.
You could try one of the state parks with a camper cabin or Itasca has cabin/hotel type lodging. Their reservation system is down right now but I think you can call the parks directly for reservations.
Bayfield or Madeline Island - we rented a cabin on Madeline Island a few years ago that was around $100 a night and had a full kitchen.
Porcupine Mountains on Michigan's Upper Peninsula - about 5.5 hours from the Twin Cities, beautiful area, lots of hiking, very scenic and cheap hotels. If you were going to stay 5 days, you could drive east along Lake Superior. There's lots to do and see on a budget.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
Red Wing is really pretty. I know you said you've been to Duluth, but have you been up the North Shore? DH and I have gone up to Gooseberry Falls for hiking, and you can go all the way up to Lutsen. Great hiking and outdoors activities.
Galena, Illinois is also very nice and pretty. It's a quaint little town on the Mississippi, lots of hiking, and pretty reasonably priced. And there's always the Wisconsin Dells. In May/June the weather will be nice, and there are actually a lot of hiking paths if you get a little away from the waterpark action.
