First time foster family!!! Advice?
We are getting our first foster dog on Saturday and are SO excited! I've been wanted to foster for along time but wanted to wait until my children were a bit older and our pup was more settled in.
So.... does anyone have any advice, hints, suggestions on making it easy on both our current dog and family?
Thanks!!
Re: First time foster family!!! Advice?
How exciting! Good luck!
Baby gates are helpful to keep pets apart while feeding or when kids are eating (esp at first).
I remind my kids that foster dogs have had a lot of changes lately so might be extra sensitive. They're instructed to sit down and call the dog to them if they want to interact with them. We stress keeping the house chill for the first little bit.
If you're going to have to potty train, make sure you have an enzyme cleaner on hand. I think leashing the dog to you all day is the quickest way to potty train.
And to keep myself from getting too attached, I refer to myself as the foster's aunt. I know it sounds silly but it helps me!
Thank you so much! I've told my kids we are babysitting an d that it's a big honor to do so. I hope they don't get too attached anyway.
We've got baby gates and nature's miracle ready to go!
Thanks!
Sounds like you're all set then!
One more thought -- My kids like looking at photos of the dogs we've fostered. I bought a collage frame for the pics and it is a nice way for the kids to remember.
