Parents...would you ever?

Put peanut butter m&m's on top of a cupcake for a bake sale at your child's school?

DS had one at school and was reactive so they gave him the Epi and called the ambulance.  We were monitored for a bit and he is doing fine thank god!

As the parent baking said cupcakes, would you think about the possibilities of allergies in the school?

Re: Parents...would you ever?

  • Personally no - I wouldn't.  But unfortunately its not on everyone's radar - especially a PB M&M.  IF they knew your son had an allergy, I'm surprised they didn't send something out saying - Peanut Free.

I'm sorry and hope he's doing better soon!!!

  • I most certainly would not - but I also have a son w/ a peanut allergy so it's on my radar as well.

  • Our school is peanut free, so no I wouldn't use anything peanut butter.  I agree that this isn't something that comes up for everyone.  Growing up- peanut butter was a school staple.

  • No, I wouldn't, because Bella's class is nut free so I'd assume it wouldn't be a good idea for a school bake sale.
  • I am hoping that this incident will start the ball rolling on the school being peanut free.  I know it is not current in everyone's mind, but I think there's so much press about peanut allergies lately that people would not want to take a chance with an audience of kids that they do not know.

Do they know your son had the allergy? If the school isn't peanut free I really doubt a parent would be conscious of it unless they have a child with an allergy. Sucks..but I hope going forward they will make some changes

  • yeah i would... but i'd think to label it.  Sorry he had to go through that though :(

  • Bella's s school is not peanut free and my kids have no issue. However with the number of kids that do have allergies and the attention the issue has gotten over the years common sense would tell me to NOT do that because you just don't know! So sorry, can on,y imagine how scary that must have benn!
  • Yes, I would think about the allergies and not send something with peanuts or nuts.  I have one child with a peanut allergy and two of my kids have a milk and soy allergy. So I live it every day and think about it.

  • We're peanut free here because there's a kid in the boys class that is highly allergic to peanuts.  Chris has a soy allergy so I'm on things and label read.
  • Nope! Not in this day and age! Stephanie & Evan's school is nut free. In fact you can't even bake homemade....everything must be store bought with ingredients clearly posted.

  • If I knew a child had a nut allergy at his school I would not. If I did make something with nuts I would clearly label it and I would also provide an alternative. I do not think that every school should be nut free. I think that schools as well as parents should work together to make sure that the needs of all the children are met and provide a safe environment for everyone.

  • The school was aware of his allergy, and I am very happy with the way they handled the emergency.  His class is nut free, but the school is not.

I wanted to post this to see how people who do not live with allergies on a daily basis felt about sending peanuts to school.  I assumed it was common to take the "better safe than sorry" route.

  • Interesting...I generally do not send things with pb for kid functions (at school or otherwise...but I have no problem handing out the pb cups for Halloween). But, I wouldn't expect that people would be mindful if it wasn't a nut-free environment to begin with. I'm glad your son is doing okay.
  • My daughter's school is peanut/tree nut free.  No baked good are allowed in school at all.  At first I thought the policies seemed extreme but after I heard that some students have touch sensitivities, and thought about how I would feel if my child had an allergy, I'm glad the school is so particular.
  • Not for a bake sale but my son's schools not nut free nor peanut free - they serve pb&j in the cafeteria - and I'll send him in with peanut butter sandwiches for lunch. I'm glad your son is okay!

  • No way. My daughter's preschool is 100%  nut/peanut free, and even if they weren't I wouldn't bring a peanut product in (even though it's my absolute favorite thing in the world). I'm so sorry you went through that!

  • Thanks everyone!  I'm trying not to be mamma bear and crazy peanut lady all at the same time!!
  • First - so sorry you had to go through that.

We are not allowed to bring baked goods for this reason - they must be store-bought so the ingredients are easily known.

Honestly - if that wasn't the policy in the school, and my kid wasn't allergic, and it was an M&M, I probably wouldn't think *so* hard about it. Our school is peanut free so it's drilled in me... but it was likely an honest mistake or oversight and this mother I am sure would feel HORRIBLE if she knows.

  • I am surprised someone did that. I'd probably avoid peanuts or tree nuts if baking.

    Glad your DS is OK.

No, it wouldn't have been on my radar. My daughter's class made peanut butter & ate it in class today. Her school is not peanut free.

I don't understand why a school would have a bake sale where there are kids w/allergies & not mandate it be peanut free.

Sorry you had to go through that & I'm glad he's ok!

  • We are not peanut free. Honestly I might but I'd label it. When we bring cupcakes etc for his class I ask if there are allergies but for a bake sale I'm either not going to participate or I'm going to make something. I'm not going to make a peanut and egg and milk and soy free thing because those are all common allergies.

And while your school did well with the epi, I'd be concerned that they let him have that cupcake. PB and peanut m&ms are pretty distinct looking.

We can't even bring anything homemade. But no. My kid doesn't have an allergy but I'm aware enough just in general life that this is an issue many do deal with. You'd have to live under a rock not to even think of it. I don't think you need to have a kid with an allergy to have it on your radar.

I was just thinking about these things too. I have a friend whose daughter has a severe egg allergy. I'm sure that's not on anyone's radar at a bake sale.

  • To add - the rule at RP's school is that if we bring in something home made for a class party we have to bring in an ingredients list, and the other class mom and I do email the other parents a few days ahead of any party we 'host' to let them know what we're serving, and we do make an effort to avoid peanuts since there are two allergies in the class. No ingredient list, the teacher won't let us serve it.

But those others are not as common as peanut. There are no egg-free schools or tables or whatever, that I know of. Of course you're not going to go crazy with it. To me though, I don't know, it seems like common sense to avoid peanut when it's been on the news that a kid died somewhere in school from a peanut allergy. And it's not just an isolated event.

You're correct though- no I wouldn't think about eggs and other dairy. You just hear peanut so often it's become ingrained. At least for me.

Buy some sprinkles and call it a day.

  • Nope. Our daycare is peanut free and I pretty much know that these days most schools are too. I'm sorry that happened!!

I don't know-- a parent who doesn't have many other parent friends outside of their family might not know this.  As women on the nest we are connected to so many other women-- I think it seems like more of a "given" here.  Or it could be that the family doesn't know anyone with an allergy.  I don't know one single person outside of Aidan's current classroom that has an allergy.

  • i am so sorry that you and your son had to deal with this, but am very glad to hear he is okay.

honestly, i am not sure that it would be something that i would sensitize to since the school is not peanut free... if i knew there were allergies in the school, yes its something i would be cognizant of, but not knowi g what information is shared with the other parents, its hard for me to say its not something i would do...

I agree with Coleen, if it weren't for the nest & fb I wouldn't be aware that peanut allergies are so prevalant.  I have plenty of non-family friends with children yet I know no one IRL with a nut allergy. Granted my kids are not in DC so that would most likely bring it to my attention, but it's not necessarily on my radar. I'm glad the school handled it well though & that your son is ok!
