Calling all cooks! Chili Cookoff help needed
Our friends are hosting a Chili cookoff and I make a chili with the following ingredients. It's more of a sweet chili but I really want to make it a sweet and spicy chili! What can I do that would be "different" than just adding jalapenos. Or do you think the best thing would be jalapenos?
(this is a wegmans recipe that I changed to use turkey)
1 lb ground turkey
2 cups diced peppers and onions
1 1/2 cups matchstick carrots
1 pkg (8 oz) sliced mushrooms
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes with italian herbs
2 cans (15.5 oz each) dark kidney beans
1 can (8 oz) crushed pineapple
2 Tbsp
chili powder Salt and pepper to taste
Re: Calling all cooks! Chili Cookoff help needed
I"m talking to Bry right now- my go to cook. He'd use a mixture of 3- one anahaim, one half to one whole jalapeno (depending on heat) remove seeds & ribs of the interior, two serrano.
Serrano & pineapple go well together.
I will try that and report back Jackie!!!
I'd go with both a jalapeno and a roasted poblano.
eta there is a whole mess of things in there that I wouldn't add to chili. Have you tasted the recipe?
Mushrooms? ick.
I'd go for black beans over kidney - they have a slight mushroom taste and they are less chewy
you can also add this http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/p-penzeyschili9000.html
or this http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/p-penzeyschili3000.html
I like Jackie's recommendations for peppers.
I'd also omit the mushrooms.

I've made it many times and it's awesome. You cook it in the slow cooker - you end up not seeing the carrots or the pineapple in the end b/c it sort of melts away. I'm not into super spicy things (I prefer horseradish kind of hot, not chili hot) which is why I tried this one in the first place.
Ew I just saw the comment about being chewy, lol. That made me gag a little. I guess it would be a little chewy with mushrooms. I swear, it tastes great - it's just on the sweet side with very little kick.
Ok, these are great. I'm going to make 2 test batches and see how it goes. Those spices look awesome Pat. I think I might order one just to have!
