How do you feel about vegetarian diets for dogs?

I know its not what they're evolutionarily meant to eat, but I wondered what your opinion was.

If its totally out of the question, do you know of any food that uses meat from animals that lived humanely and/or is kosher?

Re: How do you feel about vegetarian diets for dogs?

  • I feel that vegetarian diets for dogs are done only for the benefit of the owner, and not in the best interest of the dog. As you said, vegetables are "not what they're evolutionarily meant to eat". (Side note - not sure evolutionarily is actually a word, but that's neither here nor there).

The best diet that you can get that is kosher or that lived humanely would be a raw diet.

Agreed.  I can't imagine myself feeding a vegetarian diet.  It's just not appropriate for dogs (or cats).

  • I don't think I would be able to feed them raw. Do you have any suggestions for kosher/humane food?

     Evolutionarily is a word =P

Why can't you feed them raw? I mean, I get it. It isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for humane food, raw is going to be your best bet.

Otherwise, you are probably going to be paying a ton for a kosher food (which may still be raw). Check out some freeze dried raw possibilities. I'm not sure if any of them are raw, but you can google just as well as I can.  Smile

  • I don't know a lot about it, but I don't think I could handle raw cow hearts and stuff. I googled and found Natures Recipe has a vegetarian option, but I know I have to look more into it. I just wanted to ask =] Thanks everyone.

You get over the squeamish aspect of handling raw animal parts quicker than you'd think, lol. I used to HATE so much as helping my mom pull the skin off the chicken she used to buy (cheaper to buy skin-on and then remove it yourself, so that's what she did). Since committing to feeding Zoey raw this past summer, I've gotten to the point I can cut up my own whole chickens/turkeys. I even found it kind of fascinating watching H work a pork shoulder joint and actually seeing that joint work. I'm not a fan of sticking my hand in the cavity to remove anything they might have left in there, but if I can deal with touching chicken heart/lungs/liver (or turkey), and laugh at what male anatomical part a chicken neck looks like, I'll get to the point where I'm comfortable handling things like beef kidney or something else totally weird.

We feed raw and order through a supplier. It really isn't that bad or gross. Dogs and cats are carnivores, and while it is ok for dogs to have some veggies, it should not be their entire diet. Look more into it before you decide it's not for you.

  • What about premade raw? I know some of my local feed stores carry premade raw. It's a bit expensive, but it cuts down on the handling part of it.

  • I have been a vegetarian for 19 years, but my dogs are not. I think dogs should only be fed a vegetarian diet if there is some underlying medical problem that requires it. Otherwise, it is not biologically appropriate for dogs. I am a little squicky about handling raw meat myself, so I usually have frozen meat (fish or beef) on hand for the dogs to have once a week or so.  I don't have the space to do full raw for the pups (I barely have room for leftovers). I do have dogs that love veggies as treats :)

Thank you! There is no medical condition. How do you prepare the fish/beef? what kind of fish do you give them? What food do you use the rest of the week? The dogs love bananas and apples and broccoli, which they get every once in a while as treats.

Ditto all of this, including acting like a 12 year old boy :P

We feed raw and are able to source almost all of our meat from very small, local, sustainable, farms within a 15 minute drive from our house. We get a wide variety from the farms that includes: eggs, turkey, chicken, pork, beef, venison, duck, goose, rabbit, and soon-guinea hen! From a larger, slightly less sustainable farm, we have access to: yak and buffalo. We get a few salmon a year from a family friend that is a fisherman.

I used to be vegetarian, but am not any longer. I don't feel it is an appropriate diet for our dogs or cats, and it was not an appropriate diet for my body.

I don't understand wanting to feed a vegetarian diet to animals that are not designed at all to eat plants. Eating on yourself is one thing. We feed tripe and stomachs, which include digested plant matter, but when we feed fruits or vegetables, I consider those purely for their enjoyment.

As a side note- you have medium to large size dogs, premade raw will most likely cost you a fortune. It cost us a fortune to feed one cat premade raw. We can feed four cats a really high quality meat, for about what it cost us to feed premade to one cat. Just something to think about.

  • From an evolutionary perspective, I'm not AS opposed to it for dogs as I am for cats. I have a friend who has 2 pugs who are vegan and they do well on the diet (lots of fresh, raw foods). I, however, am a cat owner, and I do think that if you aren't willing to feed cats a meat-based diet, you shouldn't own cats.

I usually buy whatever fish is on sale, usually swai or talipia. And I boil fish or cook the beef in the oven just on foil. The dogs don't seem to care. If I had more fresh meat, I would probably just give it to them raw. If I am hanging out with family and they are eating meat, they all set aside a little meat for the pups (they are all dog lovers) so they can get bbq or raw or broiled meat, but with no salt or sauces. I'm not super savvy with meat preparation.

When they ate chicken (before I realized Heidi had some tummy problems), I would boil that as well. I would boil with some frozen veggies, and they scarf it all up.

  • Natures Recipe and Natural Balance both offer vegetarian options for dogs who have allergies to meat. I actually met a pup with such a problem, when I worked at a pet store. He did well on Natural Balance. I wouldn't recommend feeding these without a vet recommendation 1st.
