cats and anti-anxiety meds

My vet has put my cat on Buspar for her anxiety issues, and she's doing really well. She's a lot more laid back and not so skittish, she actually retracts her claws now (she's 12 years old, and I've NEVER seen her retract her claws. I honestly thought she had something wrong with her and couldn't), she's not going outside of the litterbox, and I can give her meds without needing stitches, lol She's a lot more loving now, which is great. I haven't seen any adverse affects from the medication.

But...uh...I apparently misread the dosage instructions. She's supposed to get a half a pill (2.5mg) twice a day. I've been giving her a whole pill twice a day (5mg).  Tongue Tied

Is 5mg still an OK dosage, or am I overmedicating her? is there any good reason I shouldn't keep giving her the 5mg twice a day, if my vet will change the script?

Re: cats and anti-anxiety meds

  • I would call your vet. I know when we had to have our cat on anti-anixiety it was half a pill with the intend on taking it lower over time. You really should work with your vet on this. At this point you may have to slowly reduce his dosages. Phone calls are free. I call my vet all the time for advice. Your vet is familar with your cat's health and weight and will give you the best advice.
  • Definitely call your vet on this. ASAP in case the overdose is really harmful.
