Soft puppy stool

My 2.5 month old French bulldogs but is extremely watery. He's on a grain free- high protein food that the breeder had him on. Any ideas on how to remedy this? High fiber treats? Thanks!

Re: Soft puppy stool

  • Damn autocorrect - his stool is watery
  • The food might simply be too rich for his digestive system. Not all dogs can tolerate the same high-quality foods as others. A food switch to another great product would be my first suggestion, along with offering some canned pumpkin a few times a week (the plain pureed kind, NOT pie filling; like the Libby's Pure Pumpkin). Pumpkin can help firm things up, but given too much, it swings the spectrum and contributes to diarrhea more. About a spoonful a day might be a good place to start with a baby Frenchie.

  • Ditto the pumpkin recommendation.  For my pugs (17 and 20 lbs.), I give 1 teaspoon once to twice a day if their poo is soft.

What kind of food is your Frenchie on now?  Unfortunately, even a high quality food can disagree with some dogs, so a switch might be a good idea.  That being said, how long have you had your puppy?  The stress associated with a new home could be causing the poo issues, so you might want to start with the pumpkin, and if things haven't improved in the next couple weeks, think about switching foods.

Any pictures?  I looooove Frenchie puppies!

  • I have an English bully puppy and he has loose stools from time to time, never watery though.  My vet recommended a little plain white rice in his food. GL!
  • Quincy had a similar issue; we used pumpkin and white rice and those helped a little, but it wasn't until we started giving him probiotics* that it really firmed up.  I think part of it might have been time as well; once his system was more developed, he was more able to properly digest his food.  I don't remember exactly when that happened, but I would say it was around 4 - 5 months.

*We use Wholistic Pet Digest All Plus; it has probiotics and enzymes that aid digestion.  It was recommended on this board by a very helpful poster whose name escapes me.

  • soft stool is quite common in dogs feds high protein grain free diets because those diets don't appropriately feed the normal bacteria in their gut. that is why pumpkin and probiotics help.

  • I tried to make a pic of him my sig pic and I keep getting an error message. He's on Earthborn Holistic which is what he was eating at the breeder's.  I've had him a little over a week. I'll try the pumpkin and see if things improve.  If not, I'll look into other types of food.
