XP from Travel: 6 month passport validity Q

My passport expires Aug 21 of this year.  I am looking at visiting 2 countries in the month of February, both which have the 6 months passport validity requirement (cut off date being Feb 21).

On the Department of State Consular Information Sheet the wording is different.

Country A:
your passport must also have at least six months validity remaining.

Country B:
your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your entry into Country B

So how do you read this?  Country A must have six months validity for the entire duration of my stay, and Country B only needs six months validity from the date I enter?

Unfortunately, I cannot get a new passport before this trip.  I will have to do that in March (which I will do ASAP).

Your thoughts and experiences on this 6 month validity BS are appreciated!

I'm with you on Country B, but I disagree on your read of A (in the nicest possible way).  While I think the drafting of A is crappy, I have to assume it means 6mos from date of entry as well.  I say this b/c otherwise things could get really hard in terms of timing--

Let's say I'm visiting country A for 90 days/3mos (no visa problems).  If I had to have 6mos left on my passport that would mean I'd really need a min of 9mos to go-- that doesn't sound right to me.

That said, I'm just spitballing.  Helpful I know.  Could you shoot an email to the consulates in the cities your visiting?

  • I think I'll have to check directly with the countries involved (Laos & Thailand).  Thanks for your input.  It makes sense.

What are they going to do, not let me leave because I entered the country with 6 months validity but want to leave the country with less than 6 months validity?

PSA, folks: Keep your passport valid well over 6 months at all times.  At. All. Times!

  • I think you will be okay as long as when you ENTER the country you have at least 6 months of passport validity.   But your best bet is to call the consulates of those countries just to be sure:-)

What they will do in that case is not let you enter the country in the first place.  I responded to your post on the Travel board as well with info about the Aust immigration stuff.
