Allentown airport - couple questions

Allentown airport is located in the Lehigh Valley, PA and is about 40 minutes from me.  It takes about 45-60 minutes for me to get to EWR.

I was pricing out flights, and it is about $170 more expensive to fly out of EWR.

However, some flights from Allentown "connect" in newark.  It is not a flight, it is a bus from PA to EWR.

I am really curious about a few things:

1- when you have a connecting flight, are you given separate bording passes for each flight?

2 - what happens if you miss one of the flights?  So, say for example - I check in online, and then "miss" my bus from Allentown to EWR.  Can I drive right to EWR to catch my flight there?  Missing the bus would mean saving the 45 minute drive to PA, and then saving the 1.5 hour bus ride to EWR.  Plus, saving the $$$$ on the flight.

2b - would the airline cancel my second flight if I miss the first part.  I have never taken a connecting flight, so I have no clue how they work.

3 - how does the connection work?  Are you just dropped of curbside at EWR and still have to go through security?  Do you go through security in Allentown as well?

If you have flown out of Allentown and connected in EWR, please let me know anything else that I need to know :)

Re: Allentown airport - couple questions

  • I did find this on some old message board

"I guess you know you can't skip the Allentown to Newark portion of the ticket. If you do not take the first segment (ABE-EWR) the airline will consider you a no-show and will most likely cancel your entire reservation."

So, I guess this would answer one of my questions.

  • If you're buying for more than yourself and maybe one other person, I'd really look at how much you're really "saving" - my sister lives in Allentown and her husband has done the route you're talking about and he said he could have driven it faster himself, and just paid $100 to park for the few days he was gone. You're adding several hours onto your trip doing it this way, and it might not be worth it if it's only one or two of you traveling.

To answer your quests though - yes when you have a connecting flight, when you check in you get two boarding passes - one from departure to first destination, then one from first desitnation to final destination. I can ask my BIL about security check in at Allentown but I imagine that you'll have to go through it again at EWR even if you go through it in PA because if it's just a curbside drop off, you're outside the secured area, and any time you leave the secured area you need to go back through security. And yes, if you skip the first leg (in this case, the bus), your tickets are cancelled. Terrorism concerns and planting bombs and all that.
