Anyone make their own yogurt at home? Do you think the orcess is easy or hard to do? How often do you make your own yogurt? What yogurt maker would you recommend?
I am thinking about doing this since Wyatt needs to eat whole fat yogurt and the dogs get yogurt every day as well and I thought in the long run it would be cheaper to make than buy tubs every week.

Re: Home made yogurt
We make yogurt about once a week. We use this one (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/automatic-yogurt-maker/), and after a while we bought an extra set of jars so we'd have a little more flexibility. I'm sure there are other places to get them, we just happened to have a GC for WS. I've seen recipes for doing it in the crockpot as well, although I haven't tried it.
My DH is in charge of making it, but it doesn't look that hard. You heat up milk on the stove to a certain temperature, then let it cool down to another lower temp. Then mix it with one serving of yogurt from the last batch, pour it into the jars, and let it run overnight. You will definitely need a thermometer.

Thanks for the link!
Do you know if a digital themometer will work?
Do you mean like one for a person? I doubt it because we're talking about temp ranges around 100-180 degF. Ours is digital, but it's meant for food and it hangs on the edge of the pan so we get a constant reading as the temp changes.
Another tip I just thought of - DH was getting impatient with the time it took to cool back down, so I believe he's started putting the pot in a smaller ice bath in half the sink to get it to cool off quicker.

Sorry, I meant like a digital meat thermometer. I have been meaning to get one of those ones that hangs on the edge of the pan. Guess I just need to go out and buy one.
oh, yeah I think a meat thermometer is fine! I think ours is good for both. And when the batteries died we used the one we have for the grill.
(On another note, I just got one of those ones you can use in the oven where the display is on a wire that stretches outside the over. Reading all of this together makes me think we have entirely too many thermometers lol)
