Potential pups in sig - name suggestions?
I'm sorry about my technical difficulties but I have created a sig to show off our growing family. Marshmallow is on the left. Chup (Chupacabra) in the middle, and on the right are three female samoyed puppies of which we will be adopting one. After they are temperament tested the breeder will match one to us. This pic was taken at three weeks. We are trying not to develop an attachment to any particular pup at this point.
Our current leading girl name is Luna (white, moon, wolf associations). Does anyone else have any name ideas? Any thoughts on having a name ready vs getting to know pup a little better before naming?
Me - 34. DH - 39. TTC #1 since 9/2010. IUI #3 2/3/13 + progesterone. BFP on HPT 2/17/13. Beta #1 2/19/13 = 61.9. Beta #2 2/22/13 = 71 Beta #3 77 - C/P
Re: Potential pups in sig - name suggestions?
Are you definitely getting a female, or is that the only name you've come up with so far?
A male option might be Buck (Call of the Wild). Selene is a mythological moon goddess, if you're leaning that way.
They're a Siberian breed, so perhaps you could look at Russian names? Or even a spin on one of Santa's reindeer, since apparently they were bred by reindeer herders! (I just learned all that, lol)

That being said, we had a couple of names picked out for our pup before we brought her home. We were almost definitely going to call her Kona. But when we picked her up and spend some real time with her that evening, we realized Kona didn't fit her AT ALL. We tried another option, and it just wasn't her.
We finally settled on Zoey after a week (seriously, it was nearly a week). It fits her perfectly! The only other name I could see her having is Phoebe, which I love, but H was dead set against it. Oh well! Lol. Sometimes your pup dictates what her name is going to be!

Oh a samoyed, one of my favorite breeds. I show and am familiar with the sammy breeders at shows and from meeting them when we were deciding on our first puppy. Now I'm curious who you are getting a puppy from.
Personally as for naming, I like to get to know the puppy first and see their personality before picking a name that suits him or her.
Thanks everyone for all your help and thoughts! Yes we are definitely getting a girl, checking out Russian names is a great idea. We will probably at least pick out a name prior to getting our pup, but will be open to changing it if it doesn't fit. In fact, that's what happened with our cat Chup (Chupacabra).
TheLinkBride - We are getting our dog from Kathleen Conway at Northmoor Samoyed outside of Denver. We came to her on the recommendations from several people and from everything we can tell she is a reputable breeder. Do you know her? I know she shows.
I love your dog! What's their name? I see you share my affinity for fluffy dogs!

Keefer is beautiful! I've never met a Keeshond in person but I've heard they are wonderful dogs! Thanks for your encouragement. We are very excited but also nervous. I will definitely share pictures. In fact we should be getting the 5 weekpics from Kathleen sometime early this week. Any advice is welcome. Are there any other websites or discussion boards you've found useful?
Thanks again,
Kristina
Have you done any reading on puppy training? Socialization and early training in manners like teaching self control is really helpful and important. I like Patricia McConnell's Puppy Primer and Ian Dunbar's Before and After you get your puppy (except I do not like his house training advice). I also would recommend a puppy kindergarten class (from a local training club or private certified trainer) that involves both instruction and time for puppy socialization. I did an AKC STAR puppy class.
I think joining a samoyed board could be helpful for breed specific things like grooming. I would recommend having a little session with your breeder to learn about grooming first hand.
If you haven't bought a collar and leash yet, samoyed and keeshond people use tubular nylon because it is the easiest on the coat and doesnt get all tangled so it doesn't hurt the dog as much. White Pine Outfitters is one that I have used and is made by sammy people, I especially love the soft limited slip collar.
Let me know if you have other specific questions on supplies or things.
