Diaper disposal/baby room question

We received the diaper dekor plus:
http://www.amazon.com/Diaper-Dekor-Plus-Disposal-System/dp/B00005V6C8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326478131&sr=8-2

Yes, it requires special bags instead of regular garbage bags, but it got the best reviews for keeping smell in. I hear if you plan to take the garbage out every couple of days, it shouldn't be a problem to have a regular garbage can, but I'm afraid we won't stay on it!

We're also going to give cloth diapers a go, as well, but probably not for newborn size. My questions are:

1) Pretty dumb question here, but do you need 2 garbage bins (one for cloth, one for disposables) plus a dirty clothes hamper?
2) Should the dirty clothes hamper be right next to the changing table, or can it be in the closet? I guess I'm having a hard time seeing 3 bins next to the table.
3) I feel like I've heard 2 ways of keeping cloth diapers before washing: wet and dry? Preferences? Does the type of bin matter for this?
4) Should we just get a regular garbage can for disposables, instead? If so, 30-gallon size?

TIA!!!

Re: Diaper disposal/baby room question

  • I can't answer the cd-ing questions, but in answer to #4 - I'm confused.  Are you talking about having a trash can in the room for diapers?  We just emptied our Genie (while we used it) into the trash the day before pickup.  Once we dumped the Genie, we just threw them away with our regular trash.  Also, we didn't always change the baby in her room, so some diapers just went in the trash anyway.  I don't think you need that many bins/cans.

  • Does that sucker seal each individual dipe in a portion of the bag, a la diaper genie?  If it does, it wouldn't really be good for cloth, I would think?

We rock a diaper champ - which is a glorifed trash can that uses regular bags but does a great job of containing the stank within the can. (when you open to load in a dipe, you can smell it, but then it is fresh as a daisy the moment it closes.)

We are a disposible only fam, so we fill that can once during the week (since he is at day care some of the time,) and then once over the weekend since we are using it more.

I did this for a clothes hamper (I used a hoop and a pillow case,) and have it hanging on one of the changing table drawer knobs, and I LOVE having it so close.

  • We started CD'ing after only a few days, so this might not help too much.

    1. Um, I think so. You definitely want your CDs separate from trash and separate from clothes, since they will get washed differently. The NB poo/pee didn't seem to smell THAT bad, so we just put the sposies we used in our regular trash can w/ a lid, but we didn't use more than a few dozen.

    2. We just have a little plastic trash can on one side of the table for dirty clothes and a big garbage can with a liner on the other for CDs. It's nice to toss dirty clothes in during a change, but I don't think it's a deal breaker.

    3. DRY!!! Wet is old school and is a drowning hazard. We just have a big white trash can from Target (can't remember how many gallons, but it has a swinging lid) with a liner (Kissaluv, I think) and toss everything including the liner into the wash (just turn it inside out into the washer). You should be washing every other day or so, so the diapers don't get too bad. Once you start feeding solids, you do have to adjust, is my understanding. I'll let you know very soon how that goes, haha!

    4. No idea :-)

  • I think you would be ok with something like this for disposables: http://www.amazon.com/simplehuman-litre-mini-semi-round-step/dp/B004WIZ1P0/ref=sr_1_53?s=bedbath&ie=UTF8&qid=1326480889&sr=1-53

We have something similar a bit smaller, it's plastic and black and was only $4 at target. We put plastic grocery bags in it. It will hold 2-3 days of diapers so you have to change it. It is just big enough that it doesn't smell before you empty it. The lid helps too.

You could do something similar but bigger for cloth and lin it with a liner that you throw in the wash with the CD's. Again you will be needing to wash every other day or so. The smell will be contained by the lid and it will not be sitting there for days.

As far as 3 bins. When we were trying CDs we put the 2 trash cans on 1 side of the changing table and at the other side we had a small hamper for clothes. If you are still worried about smell these work well: http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Lavender-Scented-Nursery-Fresheners/dp/B0035ER58I/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

We also got a ton of baby powder from our shower and I started dumping a bit of that in the bottom of the new grocery bag toward the end when things got really stinky. that worked as well.

  • We have 3 bins at the changing table. A simple, wooden frame clothes hamper (it has a pullout bag that I take to the washer), a small trash can for q-tips and the occasional sposie, and a large, kitchen-size stainless trash can for the CDs.

I agree with PP about the dry CD storage. I have 2 Planet Wise pail liners; when one's in the wash, the other is in the can. I do the turn out and dump into the washer method, too. I don't touch dirty dipes!  And diaper liners, in my opinion, are the best invention ever - just grab the edges, lift out, and flush. No scraping or spraying of poo.

Newborn dipes don't even smell that bad, so I wouldn't bother with a fancy diaper can for them, but that's personal preference. By the time the poo stunk, we were in CDs. And the dipes are so itty bitty when wrapped up, they didn't take a lot of space in a trash can.

  • We have a stainless steal trash can w/ lid and pail liner next to the changing table for CDs.  The dirty clothes hamper is in the closet.  When we use disposables, they just go in the regular bathroom trash.

    We keep our CDs dry

  • 1) Yes, you need one for cloth, one for trash/sposies and a hamper. I don't see why your hamper can't be in the closet.

On the trash can, as long as you have one with a good lid on it, it takes care of most of the smells, and you'll smell it when it's time to take it out!

On CD's, we initially had the trash can for wipes, etc. and a larger can with a wetbag in it for the CD's in DS's room. As he got stinky poos (after starting solids) we moved the can into the bathroom and put them in there after the change, but still have a small lidded trash can for the wipes next to the changing area.

You want to do CD's dry, not wet. A can with any water in it is a hazard, and the diapers I think have a longer life if dry (especially ones with PUL). Also, you need to wash those every other day or so (can sometimes go one more day)

on #4, if you are going to do mostly cloth and hardly any sposies for the majority of diapering time, go with a regular trash can with a tight fitting lid. I would think the special system wouldn't be used enough and your special bags would be half empty. However, if you are mostly doing sposies, then you could keep the system.

  • 1) Yes, you'll definitely want separate containers for diapers - one for cloth and one for disposables.   We have this: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2373657 for our CDs and it's lined with a planet wise wet bag.  (Like PP, we have two PW wet bags so that one is in the can and one is in the wash.) I do diaper laundry every other day and haven't had any stink issues.  We have a small trash can with a lid that we use to dispose of wipes (I don't use cloth wipes), disposable diapers and other trash.  This we dump into the tall kitchen trash can before we take out the trash.
    2) We just put his dirty clothes in our hamper, which is in our room.  I've never felt the need for him to have his own hamper.
    3) Ditto PP - keep your CDs in a dry bin, wet is old school and not safe.
    4) I don't see why you couldn't use a regular trash can. Although if you're not using disposables that often, you may have to empty it even if it is not full so that things don't get stinky so I probably wouldn't go with a 30 gallon.

  • If you're just doing disposables at first (or at least that's the plan), I would not get a fancy pail.  Newborn poo (at least with my bf babies) does not smell like regular poop, so I think you'd be okay with a cheap garbage can with a lid.

We use one of the diaper pails that just takes regular bags for cloth.  I use a washable "wet bag" instead of a trash bag, but keep them dry before washing.  They do get stinky, so something that holds smell in is good unless you're washing a lot.

We have a diaper genie for disposables.  For clothes, I usually just take them to the washer and keep them in a basket there, but you could put a hamper wherever is convenient.  I would keep clothes separate from dirty diapers.

  • We just use a regular stainless steel step can for our disposables (I wanted something I could possibly use for more than just diapers - even if it is just in the garage or something.)  I do take the trash out every 2 - 3 days but I have two little ones contributing to it (I only use one can for both).  I don't have any advice for the CDs or the hamper (we have a laundry shoot so I don't use a hamper).
  • I haven't read responses, so I apologize if I'm repeating stuff.

    1) you'll need 3 bins/cans - trash, CDs, and clothes.

    2) you can have dirty clothes hamper wherever you want.  Our house is tiny, so I just carry dirty clothes to the basket in our room.

    3) definitely dry.  I don't know of anyone who does a wet pail for CDs anymore. We just have a regular kitchen trash can and two washable pail liners. I had it in the closet for a while with Jack but it started making his room smell, so it has been in the hall outside his room since then.

    4) I wouldn't do a Genie or a big trash can for disposables.  We just have a small trash can with a grocery bag lining it for disposables.  That way you empty it more frequently and it doesn't stink.  EBF poop doesn't really smell too bad anyway, so if you're planning to do that, it shouldn't be a problem until you start to introduce solids and by then you'll be using cloth :)

  • 1. Yes, I had one bin for cloth and one for disposables.

    2. I've always had the clothes hamper in the  closet. I actually keep the diaper bin in the bathroom so there's nothing out in DS room.

    3. Everyone uses dry pails now. Wet pails are a drowning hazard and frankly, quite gross.

    4. I use a diaper genie and it's worth it for me. I throw pee diapers in the regular trash can since they don't smell. I put poop diapers in the diaper bin and take it out 2x/week. It works great.
