How to know when its time for crating?
I have had our new pet for about 2 months know. He was found as a stray by a friend who could not keep him. I think he is just a plain old mutt. He is a great dog and listens very well. I work full time and come home during lunch to let him out. He is usually good at not making a mess in the house. He has his own room so he doesnt wander the house all day. The thing that I find very frustrating is if I go to run errands, and dont take him with me he does just fine and is very well behaved while I am gone. But if I go somewhere and take him with me, but don't bring him with me next time I go out, he makes a mess. Ppl that I have talked to tell me that he is just mad and getting back at me. I let him out all the time...so I dont know why he insists on doing this. I have been thinking that crating is my best option. I have had many pets throughout my life and never crated one. I dont like the idea of keeping a pet confined, but if this is what he needs I am willing to try it out. So my question is, how do you know when a dog needs to be crated, or just more training needs to be done?

Re: How to know when its time for crating?
Dogs don't have the mental capacity to act out of spite.
And crating is not cruel -- dogs are den animals by nature, and having their own, enclosed space is comforting to them.
