In the hospital with minibini
Baby's RSV has landed him in the hospital. It looks like he will be ok but they are keeping him for observation for 24 hours at least. This is so f*cking scary. Thoughts, prayers, vibes would all be appreciated.
Re: In the hospital with minibini
Thinking of you. I know it's incredibly scary to have such a new baby in the hospital, but he's in the best hands. Try to take comfort in the fact that they're watching him very closely!!
I never understand why they ask about race. I'm sure it has something to do with demographics...but it really shouldn't matter when it comes to your care. And it's especially pointless when they don't even have your race in their system.
When I was getting a library card in the UK, my small town library had me fill out a demographic card. Under "white" the only options were "English" and "Irish." I ended up checking "European - Other" ("American" wasn't even an option). So dumb.
Anyway, I hope minibini feels better soon. Ts&Ps for all of you.
Oh no! RSV was one of my greatest fears coming into the winter season, but DD was born 2 days after the cutoff for RSV shots (up to 33w6d and she was 34w1d), so the pedi said no. I hope he has a really short stay and feels better soon!
And that's a funny story about his race. :-)
This!
And I can't believe hospitals haven't stared accommodating immigrants and multiracial families. What year is it anyway?
Some diseases are specific to race, so I would presume this is part of why the question is asked (as it relates to your care). For example, sickle cell anemia tests are only given to babies in the States who have ancestors where this could have been present (usually Black or others from tropical areas with malaria).
However, that Minibini's race isn't showing up obviously negates any potential customization of care....
Seriously. I've always used "black." I think it is more appropriate in the US. Not all white people are European descended and not all black people are African descended.
MrsBini, you should come to SA. MiniBini would have his own race class here! Though that's a whole other issue...
BFP Apr 2012, EDD Dec 19 2012 * twin h/b at 6wk, 9wk scan * Baby A lost at 12wks, Baby B was my rainbow born at 36wks
Many healthy vibes to MiniBini!
And that race thing is just stupid. I though the whole segregation thing and world war 2 were over, so why the heck do they need to know race???
Whenever I can get away with it, I refuse to fill it out. I'm not Caucasian, 'cause really, the Caucasus, where the name Caucasian is from, is between Russia and Turkey, and my family is 100 percent north-western Europe (so Germanic) and DH is half Germanic and half Roman (if you go by ancient empires), Caucasian has nothing to do with us!
Oh and another thing, if choosing race is color-coordinated, I want to be able to choose between white, yellow, red and black and not white, AA, Asian, Latino etcetera. The whole system is stupid! (Okay, I'll get off my high horse now....)
My food blog
What I'm looking forward to in 2012:

We're a mixed race couple, too, and it can be fun. Within our military-based medicine they note both our races because our kids will be monitored for specific race-based health issues. Most of that during pregnancy and first year of life. Locally, I'm not sure if it registers or if they do that already. They never mentioned it.
Hope that little Bini keeps recovering!
Oh, I would be so scared too. He is still in my thoughts and prayers.
DH is White African, that never is an option either.
