where do you work out?

2 weeks in Houston and we have had all our furniture delivered & boxes unpacked. Still not done with finishing touches but done enough that I'm not going to just focus on the house. I've started looking for yoga studios or other fitness places to work out &/or teach but it seems everywhere is at least 20 minutes away from us (we are at memorial & highway 6).

Any suggestions on places with good/fun group fitness classes?

Re: where do you work out?

  • I'm pretty sure there are a couple of Bally's near you. There is fairly new one off I-10 at Barker Cypress that would be about 5-10 min away. I always liked Bally's group classes, but I haven't been in years.

I've never tried Bally's group fitness classes but I'll give them a shot! I don't have a job right now so I'm trying to use my time to a)get back in shape b)get the house in shape c)meet some new people

    Oh, and welcome to Houston!!

    Thanks!

  • Memorial Athletic Club (MAC) and LA Fitness are both close to you. Welcome to the west side.
  • I second the MAC.

  • Welcome to Houston! Im just south of you - off Briar Forest/ Hwy 6. I am a member of lifetime fitness at City Centre. It is a bit further but I like the facility. Having said that since having DS I haven't been!! It is quite a bit more expensive than the others though.

Otherwise as PP have said it is MAC and LA fitness. A friend uses MAC and likes it there.

Oh I think there is also the westlake club that is north of memorial between Hwy 6 and Eldridge. But I don't really know anything about it.

If you are happy going to wilcrest there is also a tennis/ fitness club down there I think. There is also a women's fitness personal training place I noticed the other day that looks like it just opened south of briar forest on eldridge on the east side, no idea about that though.

At the moment I am doing baby bootcamp outside! :)

  • I third (or fourth?) the Memorial Athletic Center!  I LOVE it.  I live off Memorial and Kirkwood, so it's really close for me.  They have fantastic classes (which is the main reason I joined a gym), great workout facilities, my daughter takes swimming lessons there, etc.  It's a very nicely appointed facility and I like that it's not a chain. Plus, if you are a member at the MAC, you can also use the MACFW (MAC for Women), which is right across the street.  They have pilates, yoga, other classes, and it's a smaller facility that is only geared toward women.

I was hoping that someone who has taken classes at MAC would chime in on this! It is pretty close to us, and I like that they have a masters swim team. If you don't mind sharing how much you pay each month, can you PM me? I hate it when places wont post their prices online!

I'm also looking at joining the YMCA on Clay Road because they also have a masters swim team & the membership rates are reasonable. Has anyone been there?
