chewer!

My black lab, Emma, is 4 yrs old. We got her when she was 2, when she gets bored she will get on our bed and nibble little holes on our blankets or pillows so they end up looking like swiss cheese! she doesnt do it to clothes just our bed. (not her bed) so we keep her locked out of our room while we are gone. Why does she do this and how can we stop it if she only does it when were not paying attention or gone?! bedding is expensive im tired of buying it!!!!

Re: chewer!

  • I'm confused. You say you lock her out of your room while you're gone. So how is she only chewing holes in your bedding while you're not there?
  • Does she get enough exercise? Does she have chew toys of her own to chew on instead of bedding?

Chewing is usually a way for dogs to get out pent-up energy. Take her for a long walk, or take her out to a field and play frisbee (If I ever get a dog, I'm so doing this. lol)

and fwiw my dog did the same thing but he was a little younger than emma. I just chalked it up to being a naughty toddler, but in hindsight, I could imagine he was just a little bored with being in the house by himself all day.

  • Hi, I have bred and trained dogs for several years. Its called seperation anxiety, they get nervous and upset when you are gone. I actaully have a toy poodle who chews up stuff when I leave the room. I would suggest either putting her in a crate or exersize pen when you leave, give her things like raw hides and toys she can chew to keep her distratced, and also there is a product at pet stores called "bitter apple" or "bitter yuck" that will taste aweful if she chews it. Hope that helps!
  • yes im sure it is due to being bored. we have a fenced in yard so we kind do get lazy about taking her for walks usually during the summer we take the 4wheeler out and she runns right along side of it thats when she gets the best excersice. she does have her own chew toys that she chews on for the most part but the lady who had her before us actually gave her pillows for chew toys! so if i forget to close the bedroom door or go to the bathroom for a min i come back to her chewing on the blankets or pillows! I need to just get my butt up and take her on a walk and see if that helps.

    thank you
