Tuna water

Is there any reason not to give the tuna water strained from a can of tuna to the cat? DH eats tuna every day so it could be a nice treat and I like the idea of the tuna water not just going down the drain.

Are there any health reasons NOT to do this?

Re: Tuna water

  • I do and always have.  I never thought it would be bad for them.  I hope someone knows.
  • A little tuna water everyday is fine, as long your cat is healthy, and still eating a good quality diet.  The reason tuna is so bad for cats, is because it depletes their vitamin stores of Vitamin E and B1, and does not contain Taurine (a supplement that cat's badly need).  Tuna water is different however, because I assume your cat isn't filling up on this, and instead is just having it as a treat.  In that case, your only concern is the sodium, but this too is ok providing your cat does not have any heart or kidney issues.

One more consideration however.... is your cat finicky?  You don't want them to get so used to the tuna water that they refuse to eat their regular food.  Otherwise, I say give kitty a treat!

(I'm new to here to The Nest but have alot of knowledge about cat health since I have a 2 year old Ragdoll with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.  This congenital heart disease requires alot of research, care, time, patience and of course, money).

  • He is anything but finicky, he's definitely an eater!!

He just got over having urinary crystals so I really loved the idea of getting him to drink more. I've been adding water to his canned food, and if we give him tuna water I plan on mixing in filtered water as well.

     Thanks for the information :)

My cat, who looks a little like yours ;) had the crystal problem too and my vet told me that dry food is better than wet. I think it makes them more thirsty because it is drier. Mine is also on Prescription Diet because of it. I would just make sure he is drinking more than just the tuna juice or add the juice to the regular water dish (don't let it sit for too long, it might smell!), you don't want him to have anymore problems!

What!? I would find a new vet ASAP. I have never heard a vet recommend this for a cat with crystals. The only point is that they need more water... feeding them dry so that they are even more thirsty doesn't make any sense. This is old and probably no one will see this now, but I was so surprised by that comment that I couldn't help but respond.
