I had my CT scan on Friday and follow-up appointment with the doctor
today. He looked at the CT and said that right now the vertebrae are
50-60% fused which he said is very good for being 5 months post-op. He
said he usually doesn't even do the CT until 6 months, but he did it
early to make sure nothing was wrong with the screw (there isn't) just
to rule out that as a cause for my pain. He said he is still not
concerned with the pain I am in and is satisfied that it is relieved by
the lower medication. He said that he understands my frustration, but
that he is still pleased with the results and feels that I am actually
doing better than most who have had a "revision" surgery. He reiterated
that when he opened up my back, he proceeded to go to the right and
removed part of the bones there, which is the same way my surgeons went
when I was 12. Therefore, there is more scar tissue and trauma to that
area. Additionally, this is where my injury was (where the disc entered
into the spinal column and pinched the nerve roots)---so that adds to
the trauma. I still have a few additional PT sessions and he is very
pleased with my water aerobics/swimming. He thinks that will make a
huge difference in my recovery and how I feel.
I specifically asked him about going back to school in January/going
back to work. He feels very confident that I can proceed with this plan
and he will clear me for working/taking care of patients after the
first of the year and will increase my abilities throughout January. So
I should be able to start clinicals in February without problem.
The only thing he did today was give me a medication to coat my
stomach. Even though I have been taking Zantac for my stomach, I have
been having a lot of stomach pain when I eat over the last few weeks
(only when I eat)---and it doesn't seem to be epigastric (heartburn) or
in the right upper quadrant (gallbladder), so he is slightly concerned
that it could be an ulcer. However, the medication I am on has a really
low incidence of GI problems so he's not entirely sure. So that's one
thing to keep an eye on---but overall not a big deal.
