If you have/had babies and hardwood floors

I have hardwood floors and now E is beginning to sit and crawl (army style LOL).  I put a blanket down but it is not good enough and every time she rolls over I'm scared she will smash her head.

What do you put down on the floor for baby?  I was thinking those giant foam puzzle pieces so at least there will be some padding down for her.  Then a thick blanket over it if need be.  Any other suggestions?

We had carpet in our last house so this was not an issue there.

Re: If you have/had babies and hardwood floors

  • When my kids were babies (Leo is 1 now so he's not a LITTLE baby) I had an area rug over the hardwood in our living room. Otherwise, we had hardwood throughout the house. I know Max bumped his head a few times but really, what can you do---lol. Just try and watch I guess. I follow Leo around like Im his stalker, so I am USUALLY in time tocatch him but sometimes NOT. lol
No thanks, I don't need child porn or Tweets from this site---thanks for the memories nesties---RIP, Franco---2004--2012.
  • I had an area rug and a foam  mat. They make them (I think maybe at one step ahead) that look more like a hardwood floor in case you didn't want to have another primary colored thing in your house. I don't think the mat was necessary per se but for me with two babies it helped me if I was busy with one and the other one fell over or something. I didn't worry as much.

nothing. we have all hardwood & tile. if it's what you have it's what they get used to.

  • I didn't do anything - we don't have area rugs because we have a dog that sheds a lot and I don't want to deal with hair on the rug, so he just crawled on the hardwood. He never got hurt or bruised or anything.

  • The living room has an area rug. The "play room," (which is really just an extension of the living room) has some foam letters but is still the hard wood. The rest of the ground floor is hardwood...stairs and 2nd floor have carpet.

You think it'll be a problem but it won't be. It's not like you can put foam padding around your house. And believe me even now when his head hits the area rug there is a huge thunk....it's barely providing any padding.

  • When he first learned to sit up, I kept him on his crib quilt on the living room floor right in front of the couch, just in case he fell back. I'd also play with him on our bed & on a foam mat in another room.

Once he started crawling, though, the blanket made it worse b/c he'd slip on it or drag it along. So, he just crawled on the hard wood. It was actually better, imo b/c his bare feet got good traction to push off with + no rug burn!

When he learned to pull up to standing, but hadn't learned to fall down on his butt yet, that was the worst b/c he'd fall straight back. During that phase, I just had to shadow him & made sure we practiced falling on his butt a lot.

  • Funny you ask this today...we have all hardwoods with a small area rug in our main living area (under the couches and coffee table, in front of the tv).  DD is a rolling maniac and learning how to go from sitting to crawling, so we just put down a small area of the foam puzzle pieces you mentioned.  Up until now, we were using a blanket and/or the mat from her activity gym but we couldn't keep her on it and she kept falling forward and hitting the hardwood.  The puzzle mat is ugly as heck, but we can pick it up and hide it easily if we have company.

  • we have an area rug in the living room and foam matts in the playroom but other than that, we don't do anything.  My son is 11 months and also does the army crawl...hilarious isn't it!  There isn't much I can do and he has bumped his head, actually did it tonight when he was trying to roll to the side.  My biggest thing is keeping the floor clean!  that child will find the smallest crumb, lint, whatever and it goes right in his mouth!!!  LOL
  • We had a foam puzzle thing on part of the floor (no idea about brand or anything, it was a hand-me-down from  a cousin). It was great until the kids were mobile, then it was useless since they would crawl right off of it. We never had any injuries from the hard floors.
