Poop eating help needed

New rescued dog seems to be taking a strong liking to poop. We tried tobasco sauce on poop. He still ate it. We tried picking it up daily. But now we just caught him trying to eat our first dog's poop as she was pooping. I've dealt w some poop eaters in the past but tobasco sauce always worked. We just recently upped his food amount (he is still really underweight, some of u may remember my past post that I adopted him from my shelter from a guy who couldn't afford dog food). So we're really not mad at him for doing this bc we think he may have had to do it for food before as he never knew when his next meal was coming. But if anyone out there has other advice, we'd appreciate it. He's a huge lover but his breath his just so staaanky.

Re: Poop eating help needed

  • Ick.

One of my old fosters was a poop eater. I added canned pineapple in water to their diets and after 1 day she stopped eating it.

  • One of my girls eats poop and there's nothing that will stop her. Well nothing except me getting to the poop first. That's what works for DH and I really make sure when our other girl or foster goes we are right there so that it doesn't give her the opportunity to get it.

I tried the canned pineapple (among other things people recommend) and unfortunately none of it worked. She likes poop and clearly doesn't think it tastes bad so adding pineapple (something she had to EAT in the first place) to the poop didn't alter/effect the taste where she wouldn't eat it. If a dog's going to eat poop and they eat pineapple combining those two doesn't make sense to how that wouldn't be appealing to them. I know it works for a select few dogs so it's worth a try at least.

I would try pineapple before I gave Italian dressing -- there is garlic and onion in salad dressing, which is toxic to dogs, plus salt and sugar.

  • A friend of mine tried everything and eventually just realized that her dog would never stop eating poop in the yard. She just started putting a muzzle on for backyard play (her dog's a greyhound, like mine, so she got a muzzle during her adoption).
  • Hi, I have 2 toy poodle males that LOVE to eat poop ewww... But anyways they will even eat the other dogs poop, I have raised dogs and grew up helping my mom in her boarding kennel my whole life. There is a product you can buy called "Deter" AKA Coprophagia Deterrent Soft Chews, you can buy it at Walmart or any pet store. I put it in their food and my other dogs food as well, IT WORKS! The only thing that has worked for me anyways.

  • We live in an apartment complex and it's required to pick up poop immediately after they go. Try this... if there's no poop on the ground, there's no poop to eat. Solved.

Or if you have a backyard and you're doing the whole "picking up piles of poop once every two days" sort of thing, maybe you can set up one of those tinmetel trash bins and use it like a diaper geenie. Get a pooper scooper and pick them up after Fido does his business. Take the poopy trash out when it's full lol.

They also have these meds that I've heard of that will make their poop taste nasty if they eat it. But i wouldn't try this. I would just pick it up immediately.
