Well, my sick kitty is home and much better. However I have decided to switch him only to wet food (before he was eating a combo).
How much wet food should he get daily now that he's only eating wet?
Re: Wet fod diet for cats
We feed Wellness cans and on the can it says 2 cans (3oz size) for about 6-9lb of body weight. I think that is a good starting point.
What were you feeding before?
Whoa, that's double what I've read. You need 15 calories per lb of cat. Sherlock is 9 lbs so one can of cat food (around 185 calories per can) is all he needs in a day.
Hes getting a mixture now so he gets 1/2 can of wet and 1/3 cup of dry a day.
ETA: sorry I just read that you said 3oz cans. I'm going off of 5.5 oz so we are about at the same place.

Before we were feeding mostly dry and they'd get a bit of wet for dinner (like an ounce). But the wet obviously wasn't a big part of their diet.
He will now be on wet only.
I think it depends on the kind of food. Feeding instructions should be on the cans/boxes though. We feed our cat the fancy feast 3oz cans - for our 12lb cat, they recommend 3 cans/day. We do 2 (one AM and one PM) and supplement with a scoop of dry food in his bowl during the day to help keep his teeth clean from plaque (and because DH hates the smell of wet food).
He had stopped eating the dry food altogether when on an only dry food diet & our vet couldn't find anything wrong with him medically - he is just picky. When we switched him to mostly wet with some dry, he started eating the dry again, go figure.
Just so you know, dry food doesn't help keep their teeth clean. That's like saying chewing something crunchy would keep your teeth clean. "Hmm, I need to clear my plaque buildup; I think I'll chomp on a few crackers." Lol.
Dry is typically just easier/less expensive to feed than wet food alone.
