Rec your booster (car)seat

when the new baby comes, we're changing Brandon into a booster seat since he already meets the requirements now, and he'll be 4 1/2 by then.  which do you use?

Re: Rec your booster (car)seat

  • I just bought a Britax Frontier 85 during the Britax sale. To me, it was a toss-up between the 2 clear frontrunners, the Britax and the Graco Nautilus. I chose the Britax because it seems more comfortable/padded, the harness height is easier to change, and we like DD's Britax Roundabout and hate the Graco ComfortSport (which we keep in Houston to use when we visit).

ETA: We haven't moved her into the Frontier from the Roundabout yet, so I can't yet give any personal feedback.

  • Julia is in an evenflo big kid for now, although we're planning to buy a nicer one once we get a bigger car. It fits her beautifully, but that seat has a reputation for poor fit on a lot of kids. The graco turbobooster has the best reputation for fitting most kids in most vehicles, even better than the britax booster (frontier is good, but that's harnessed and $$$). The other ones that get good reviews in the carseat world are diono (formerly sunshine kids) monterey and recaro vivo.

If possible, take him and try them out (BRU will let you) because not all boosters fit all kids well (diono is better for bigger kids, graco is better for the slimmer kids) and even if a booster gives a perfect fit in one vehicle it may be horrendous in another (Julia can't use hers in my mom's car because it positions the seatbelt over her soft abdominal tissue instead of her lap/hip bones).

  • I assume I can't go backless yet, right?

  • Official answer, yes you could. Carseat safety advocate answer, it is not recommended. Basically, many kids do better starting in the high back since it still feels like a carseat (and they need the reminder to stay still, keep buckled, etc). Also, high back boosters may provide additional side impact protection, although the US has no test standards for that so there's no real way of knowing.

Realistically, Julia's backup seat is a bubble bum, which is an inflatable backless. I'm comfortable letting her ride in it for short trips (and I love where it positions the lap belt, it's the best fit I've seen actually), but the sides help her stay in position while sleeping, so she uses a high back mostly.

I didn't even think of this part.  He does fall asleep a bunch in the car...
