Please talk me out of my anxiety!

Ryan had a weird fever virus last week.  He had 103 fever for 3 days (1st peds visit - virus, no meds), then felt generally crappy for a few more.  He had hives all over him after a few days so we went back to the doctor, who gave him steroids which got rid of the hives but messed with his behavior.  I called the doctor again, they tapered him off the theroid, and he seemed fine.  The on Saturday he starts complaining on and off that his legs (calf muscles, not joints) hurt.  It would last for like 5 minutes, then go away for hours.  It happened again this morning so finally I called the peds again.  The nurse says it happens in some kids at the tail end of a virus like he had, and just to watch for fever (none) and lethargy (none).

My mom has him today because they have no school and I am at work.  I am a MESS because I googled and I am convinced he has like 5 different horrible things.  You would think I would be reassured because the nurse IMMEDIATELY said this is a common reaction after a virus but I am so worked up already, I am assuming the worst.

Argh.  I know how crazy this sounds but I can't help it!  I am doing everything I can  to be sure he is OK, but i am still so upset.

  • lisa, you know two things to be true...

    1. google is the enemy

    2. when our babies are sick no one can talk us out of our anxiety...

stay off of google, and listen to your nurse...if he still seems off, take him back to the dr (trust your instinct) and try not to make yourself too crazy...

  • aha - i had such bad anxiety from the kids being sick so much last year- that it gave me iBS issues, and i'm now on meds for that, lol (Celexa- and i can say it's really helping me get through this sick season without freaking out).

griffin and gibby both get hives with random viruses - nothing odd- we don't give anything but benedryl to help with those... and as for aches and pains- that's normal, too, with any kind of bug... and can be growing pains, too.

    i wouldn't stress at all.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • That's so weird Lisa. Ethan was sick last week (ears/malaise/eye goop) and this morning he was complaining that he couldn't walk because his calves hurt!

So odd. Doug checked him out and he was fine. Probably the tail end of a virus.

That is weird!  You are lucky that you have a doctor in the house, LOL.

He has been fine for the rest of the day - walked all through costco with my mom without a problem.  Our pedi's nurse did say they are hearing this a lot.  Feel better Ethan!

  • Months ago Bella had a cold, like, a really slight cold.  2 days later she couldn't walk...kept saying she had pain in her leg, all the way up on top of her thigh, almost by her hip.

We took her right to the ped because naturally we were freaking...turns out that joint pains like that at the tail end of a cold/virus are very common.  Who would have thought?  It was a big relief.

  • Thanks everyone!  This is my favorite part about the Nest - I legitimately feel better now knowing that this actually does happen to other kids too!

I feel better now, too! I think from sleeping all night, he might have gotten a cramp. He was better after he was up and walking around for a while. He was out playing all day today, so I know he's fine.

P.S. I was all ready to take him to the hospital!!!
