Cat food suggestions? Throwing up after eating

Our crazy cat is currently on Blue Buffalo- Grain Free (can't remember what flavor of the top of my head). He was on Wellness but wasn't maintaining a good weight so we switched him to grain-free. He never over-eats though. We feed him once a day but he ends up eating fast and puking it up. We've tried a slow-feeder and he didn't want anything to do with that-- he ended up tipping his food bowl over and eating it off the ground. I tried wetting his dry food but he wasn't happy with that either.

He throws up some wet foods (chunky ones) and has been picky about the more ground up foods in the past. (The dog gets very jealous when the cat gets wet food too).

Does anyone have any suggestions for other food we could try? If we switched to wet food only, what do you do when you go away?

Cat does have history of foreign object bowel obstruction but vet isn't concerned that this is related to his past surgery.

Thanks!

Re: Cat food suggestions? Throwing up after eating

  • Our one cat binges when she's free fed and then throws up.  We don't free feed her...problem solved.

When we're away, we have someone stop by twice a day to feed the cats and scoop litter.

  • He doesn't have an unlimited bowl, which is my understanding of free-feeding. I might be wrong about that definition though. We feed 1/2 cup of food a day (eta: which is the recommended serving size for that food) and he rarely finishes that. When we leave for a weekend, and leave enough food for that time period, he never finishes what we give him.

  • Ok so I've been looking up timed feedings vs free feeding... the only concern is that when my cat is hungry and there isn't food there, he doesn't ask for food. He eats things (blankets, strings, plants, carpet... baskets...) and he doesn't stop until we feed him. Maybe he'd change with timed-feedings, but I'm a bit worried without being around him 24/7 that he won't cause another obstruction.

I just started feedings only twice a day.  My one cat is diabetic and this is a way to help with his diabetes.  I have your problem with my one cat destroying things when he can't eat when he wants to.  I can only tell you it gets better he doesn't destroy stuff as much and now it's normally only an hour before the next feeding.  I try and play with him when he starts to destroy stuff to distract him.

  • We free feed dry (3 cats) and feed a grain free wet good twice a day.  Helped a lot with one cats puking to do small meals of wet food.

  • If it is an issue of eating too fast, try putting a small sized tennis ball in the food. Or, get a dog food puzzle. We have used both with different cats and it has worked well. GL!

I do have a dog food puzzle- tried it with my dog but he was scared of it. I'll see how the cat reacts to it.

Thanks for your suggestions so far!

  • I have a cat that binges and pukes.  I've tried putting small bits of food in the bowl at a time, petting him while he eats to make him eat slower, separating him from his brother (they eat together), etc.  Changed foods, been to vet, etc.  I've pretty much given up.  I might get some small balls to put in his food, except the puppy would want to get them and play with them lol though I guess i could just put them in there at food time.  Good luck with your issue!

We didn't free feed, so we just put a ball in S's bowl when it was time to eat.

  • Did you transfer the food slowly? If not that may be why the vomiting. My cats get canned at 7am and 7 pm wellness which is grain free. A bit of dry mid day. When we are gone we have a pet sitter.
  • One of our cats will vomit after eating - very rarely, maybe once every few months - but we haven't been found an issue except he has kitty zoomies too soon after he eats. We're just careful now to schedule playtime with lasers or feather wands before dinner.

We feed around 6:30 am and pm. It took a bit to convince our first cat that he would survive without a full bowl of food 24/7, but it works for us. We feed Taste of the Wild, and our boys do well on that. I understand the company is fantastic about sending samples to potential customers, if you want to try them out.

We like the Kong wobbler for our dog, who also has a tendency to eat too fast; maybe a smaller version of that would help your kitty? I'd also try to encourage him to drink more water, perhaps with a fountain.
