We have PTO at work. It's calculated based on the amount of service you have. I get 104 hours this year (I think hours is the important word to note here). I work 6.5 hours a day. This comes out to 16 days.
I'm being told that if I take a full day I'm really using 8 hours since a work day is 8 hours. Um, not for me it's not. So if I take off from 9-12, it's 3 hours of PTO. If I take off from 2-4 (when I leave) it's 2 hours of PTO. But if I take off a whole day it's 8 hours??? Can someone explain this to me???
Under this logic, I'm better off working 4 days a week/8 hours a day. At least that way I'd ACTUALLY be taking 8 hours off if I took a day off. Nevermind that my hourly rate is indeed calculated based on working a 32.5 hour work week....not 40. So you're paying me for 6.5 hours off work a day but I am getting docked PTO time that I wouldn't have worked in the first place??? I don't get it. And I need someone to present to me a very rational, calm, logical way of presenting WHY this isn't really fair.

the PTO pools in the system are most likely set up based on bands of employees and the assumption that a full day is 8 hours. to reprogram the system for 1 employee would most likely be costly and not very efficient.
PTO is broken down into hours so that you can use it in the manner that you described...2 hours here, 3 hours there, etc...however, there has to be some general idea of what a day equates to otherwise, bc you work 32.5 hour weeks, you get 16 days of PTO, and someone who works 40 hour weeks only gets 13 days of PTO...that doesn't seem fair now, does it...
think of it this way...generally, my work day is 10 hours...if i was in the same PTO band as you, should i ony get 10 days?
Kelly, using the example of you going OVER the hours that you are paid to work is not the same. You are choosing to put in that extra time. Last week I stayed till 4:30 or 5 every single day but I'm not getting compensated for the extra time nor am I looking to be. Telling me that if I want to take a full day off = getting docked time I wouldn't have worked any way isn't fair.

in your offer letter is your PTO defined by hours or days?

And honestly, I'm the only person who works these types of hours. Everyone either works a full 8 hours/day or has an abbreviated work week of 4 days or something like that. So clearly this was not thought of when the PTO policy went into affect. My salary is defiantly based on working a 6.5hr day. So I just don't see how you can take time away from me that I would not have worked in the first place.
And believe me I get putting in extra time (or the opposite - those who don't even work their 40!) but I don't get paid based on 40hrs so really it's not like I'm getting away with anything! I might get a few extra hours off but I get paid CONSIDERABLY less than just about everyone here.

A minimum of 1 hour must be charged on any day PTO is taken and then in at least 1/2 hour increments for the rest of the day up to a max of 8 hours per day.

It's a benefit for all full time staff & by definition a full time employee is anyone who works at least 32 hours per week.
I'm really not trying to be a PITA but as Deb pointed out, when I take a week vaca I don't get paid on 40 hours - I get paid on 32.5 so why on earth would I have to use up my time for hours I'm not scheduled to work?

I totally get what you're saying and that would bother me, too. I don't know much about PTO since I don't have that system here but if I was only working and getting paid for 6.5 hours I wouldn't want to be docked 8 for a day that I took off.
I'd check with someone in HR and see if the fact that you're one of the only people working this kind of schedule is why you were told 8 vs. 6.5
I agree with the others, talk it out with your HR in more detail. I also have PTO, but my company all runs on a 40 hour week so there's no confusion. I would think those that work a 40 hour week in your company should be on a different tier of PTO. When I worked for a 37.5 hour/week company, a vacation day was a day of work.
It's just really awkward that your company has two systems of working time and only 1 system of vacation.
It needs to be fair to all so they either let you keep the 13 days and charge you for 8 per PTO day, or they cut down the equivalent hours from 104 for the year to 84.5 and charge you 6.5 per day. You're right that it's not fair to harm you because you're not an 8 hr a day employee, but it's also not fair for you to make out better because you don't work the 8.
Also, you mention that some work a compressed week of 10 hr days. Do they charge them for 8 per day also??? Your policy needs a major overhaul, IMO.
