juicing: where to begin?

someone just gave me the mother of all juicers (a breville dual disc). I do not like vegetables, but clearly need them (love fruit). I've been doing monsters in the ninja for awhile. the other night i made a juice with romaine, spinach, carrots, cucumber, celery and half an apple. any suggestions for other juices? where do you find good recipes? any blogs about it you like? i am doing it for health, not to do crazy fasts or cleanses (if they are a good idea, etc, we'll explore that down the road). for now, i just want to get started and get the goods in my body. Thanks!!!

Re: juicing: where to begin?

  • I never use recipes; I like to play around with what I have on hand and what's in season. I also try to incorporate veggies that are nutritious but that I don't like on their own, like beets and kale.

It's not a hard and fast rule, but I've found that the best juices are the ones that include a fruit, a watery vegetable (e.g. cucumbers, iceberg letture, celery), and a nutrient-dense vegetable (e.g. spinach, beets).

I also like to add ginger sometimes (be careful though, it's easy to go overboard!) or herbs like cilantro or basil.

  • Have you heard of Joe Cross' juicing program. He's an Australian who came to the states and juiced for sixty days straight. He lost a ton of weight and was able to get off his medication for an autoimmune disorder. His movie is called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead and it is inspiring. He has a website with tons of great recipes. You can watch the full movie on Hulu and Joe's website is fatsickandnearlydead.com

I did his program for fifteen days, lost ten pounds, and had more energy than I remember having in years. Once I became accustomed to the juicing I just made up my own combinations. He recommends 80% vegetables to 20% juice. Highly recommend.

    Good luck!
