Jewish ladies-silly question for you

Seinfeld has sparked a debate in our house and I need your help.  Do you pick god parents?  I know it is silly and I would normally ask my SIL these silly questions but she is recovering from surgery.

I never heard of jews picking godparents until the nest. I don't know any jewish friends with godparents and I don't have them.

Ive also never heard of jewish godparents (i dont have any nor do my brothers, or anyone else i know).

It's obviously not a thing like it is in Catholicism/Christianity. I dont think there is any ceremony that involves godparents or at least I've never been to one, been part of one, or been invited to any involving friends and their kids..

There is no reason in judaism to pick g-dparents.  That said, it can be a way to honor someone close to you.  I have g-dparents, as does Alana.  But, it has no real significance, like in the Catholic church.

We picked god parents for both of our sons. It was part of the bris ceremony.

Ok I guess we do things differently but to the mom of boys: if you had a bris, there are certain parts of the ceremony (again, at least ones that I've been to) the mohel calls the babies' god parents to partake in blessing. Did that not happen?

He called upon the grandparents for a blessing but no godparents. At least not for either of my boys. (and that was two different mohels---1 reform and 1 something else that starts with an r and was very rude to me about not being Jewish myself)

Reconstructionist? I've not seen g-d parents included in a bris, but there are many variants that can occur in a service like that, depending in belief, so i'm sure some mohels include it. But, if the parents said that they haven't selected any, i'm sure the mohelwould just proceed without that part. So,I think it really is parent choice.

This is how it was for the one that I was a god parent of.

The only 2 brises I've been to, did have g-d parent part.  When we did Abby's baby naming we did not have g-d parents in it.

Yeah. He was a fill in because the mohel we choose had too many babies born on M's b-day. Needless to say, we did not call him for S's.

For my nephew's bris the mohel called upon me to be his godparent.  For my nieces naming same thing.  We aren't naming godparent's for my daughters but my brother and sil will have a part in the ceremony.
