Anyone ever do a spartan race/tough mudder?

I've always wanted to try, and there's a Spartan Sprint this summer so I think I can handle 3-4 miles. Anyone ever done it? How hard is it? I go to the gym 3x a week but not sure how much that's going to help me in these races.

  • I believe MrsKellyT has. I know my friend at work did and it kicked her ass lol.
No thanks, I don't need child porn or Tweets from this site---thanks for the memories nesties---RIP, Franco---2004--2012.
  • my good friend just did the last one and placed in the top 5%, they invited her to do "worlds toughest mudder" but she said she was too much of a wimp for it (yeah right!) It's tough, it's not just 3 or 4 miles of running. It's jumping over stuff, and crawling, and climbing and yada yada. For her, the worst was the ice bath.
  • My hubby did the tough mudder...He was running about 5 miles every other day and lifting weights 2-3 times a week....He said you have to do it with people who motivate you to keep going....He saidd the worst was the ice bath and swimming across the river since it was freezing cold (He did it in November)  It was also 13 miles....He said that when you are done, it is the most rewarding feeling

  • Kelly did one last year. I can run 13 miles, I'm stong, but I'm a wimp. One of my friends has done a few of them and he trains specifically for them. I guess you don't HAVE to but it's more than being ale to run.

I think I can talk MH into doing it with me, and I'm in decent shape. 13 miles I could never, but I think 3 is doable. Just one of those things I'd love to cross off my bucket list! Next time I see Kelly on here, I'll have to ask her.

I keep thinking about doing it but I've come to the conclusion, after doing a bunch of races, that I hate racing. And Rob won't 'let' me train for more because I ge too obsessed with them, lol. I totally admire anone who has done one and Kelly seems t have had a good experience from what she said afterwards, and my friend Doug loves, absolutely LOVES, doing them. He's addicted! So that says something. Good luck if you do it!

  • I did Warrior Dash at Windham Mountain in the fall.  My DH and I did it together.  We weren't in great shape, but I was working out somewhat regularly.  The reason that one was so tough was because the first 1.5 miles was all up a mountain, like 70 degree incline.  That was harder than any obstacle on the course!  Tough mudder scares me because of the live currents.  We were contemplating doing Rugged Maniac this year, but we'll have to pass!  It was a lot of fun, I'm glad I did it.  I'd do another one, but not sure I'd do Warrior Dash again.

The two I'm chosing b/t is Spartan Sprint or the Warrior Dash, just based on the dates and locations. I'll google Rugged Maniac, I didnt come across that one yet!

  • The PA spartan sprint last year was supposed to be 3 miles. It ended up being a little over 5. Mostly UP a ski slope.

Warrior dash is more geared toward fun.

This is really helpful, thanks. I was hoping to get an idea of which race is more intense, then maybe try a more difficult one another year. Thanks Deb.

  • I liked the look of Rugged Maniac, the one I was looking at was in Englishtown.  I thought it might be more flat than Warrior Dash.  All the sites should have a course map to show you the obstacles.  I was looking for one that had more obstacles less running because I'd rather do the obstacles than the running.  I was seriously sore for like a week after.  And when you decide, try to register early, they get expensive!

  • I want to do one sooo badly!   I def can't do the long 13 mile one, I don't run...but I could do the shorter one (I think -- LOL).  I can run if I had to and I am in decent shape, but I am also a bit of a chicken when it comes to certain obstacles.   A friend of mine wants me to do one in July and it's a short one with more obstacles.  We'll see if I chicken out or not!  LOL  But it's on my bucket list!
  • I'm doing a Tough Mudder in May in the Poconos.  I CAN NOT WAIT!  I'm doing it with a couple of coworkers/friends.  DH is planning on doing the TM in Englishtown in October.

  • I am officially intimidated by you people and am signing off the nest forever, lol.  Y'all are out of my league.  My toughest muddler involved coffee liquor and vanilla ice cream.

  • My DH just did the TM in Freehold in Nov and i watched. It was 13 miles. When he registered for it i was bummed i didnt. However after watching i am glad i didnt. It was cold muddy mess..lol I actaully did a full 26.2 marathon in the rain and thought that was better then the TM..lol It just looked really gross and cold. He lucked out and did a 830 wave and it wasnt crowded. By the time he was done 2.5hrs later we went to watch and it was packed. So people were waiting to do   an obstacle and shivering and looked purple. Ummm no thanks! I think i might rather run 26 miles first!

I however wouldnt mind doing maybe a 3 miles oor possible 5-6 mile one. in warm weather..lol

  • I have some friends both guys and girls that have done the Tough Mudder and said it's crazy. The ice cold water is the worst. My friend asked me to do it with her and I said sure! I thought it was just a mud run....then I looked it up. It's like a basic training style obstacle course, including running through a field of live wires (which apparently you can opt out of- you also can't do it if you have any pins/rods in your body.) I told her she was batsh!t and thankfully found out I was pregnant 2 weeks later lol! I'll stick to regular races. Plus, they don't even give you a freaking medal! You get a headband!
