Feeding a toddler

DD is very small and at her last appointment they told us we need to start coming in for monthly weight checks. Before that, she'd eat pretty much whatever we gave her to an extent. Lately though it's been a struggle at every meal but usually by dinner she will eat. She's almost 20 months. Tonight we hit an all time low with hardly any food all day and just a few bites at dinner. She does want to eat fruit tonight but we really need her to eat something more fatty. Would you just let her have the fruit or hope that she gets more hungry and eats what was fixed for dinner? Any other tips for adding fat to her diet? We've being giving her plenty of avocado and peanut butter and adding oil and butter to things. How can I get my child to eat?!

  • If you have a copy of Dr. Spock it has lots of good techniques on feeding picky eaters.

  • DD had to do monthly weight checks until age 2. She is still pretty small but the Dr. says she make just be on the small side, right now G is 26 months and only 22lbs, she hasn't tripled her birth weight but she is gaining in height.

We used a lot of full fat dairy and gave her as much milk as she wanted. I think this messed us up a bit because she would fill up on milk and then wouldn't eat. We really started feeding her all day long. She has little snacks all day but it gets her to eat more

Does she have things she likes? I would start there. Oh and at her age dipping is pretty big, we got G to eat a lot more if we let her dip whatever in some sort of condiment or sauce.

Did they give you an ideal weight gain?

  • Thanks for all of the input. My post sounded a little crazy I'm sure but we're really struggling and stressed about the situation. Dipping is definitely big with her as well as snacking so we need to come up with more high fat dips and snacks. I'll check out the blog too!
