Dry skin patches on kids?
What lotions, ointments, etc. would you recommend? Both DDs have dry patches on their skin. My littlest has a few patches on her belly. The most noticeable ones on my oldest are a few patches near one of her armpits and then oddly on top of both hands. I've been using moisturizing lotion for over a week now and it doesn't seem to be helping.
Also, should I run humidifiers? I've heard that could help. TIA.
Re: Dry skin patches on kids?
it's likely eczema. My DH has it... and my boys have it a little.
Curel anti-itch lotion helps... and there is a cortizone ointment that my DH uses, too that has helped.
Mangia! My Family Table
My DD had what I thought were just dry patches but nothing would heal them- and I tried everything under the sun! I finally took her to the pedi, who took one look at it and said "it's eczema." She prescribed a steroid ointment for the one spot, which was a scaly and bright red area on the inside of her elbow. She also had a spot on the crease of her ankle on top of her foot, but that was cracked open. Pedi said Neosporin for that to heal up the open skin. We also slather her in Cera Ve lotion every day and use a humidifier. We stopped doing daily baths, but she gets sponge baths. And per the pedi, we use Dove soap when we do bathe her. All of this was back in October and her skin is so much better now!
make sure you use a very gentle, natural type of shampoo (not j&j) Method is a decent brand that's not too expensive. We use Yes 2 Carrots mostly. A lot of the chemicals in J&J and other brands of the same level are very irritating, despite saying "gentle" or "sensitive."
Don't bathe every single day, or at least don't use soap every day... you can let them splash in plain water though.
For lotions we use a few different ones. Vanicream, Burts Baby Bee dry skin cream (for right on the really bad patches), avocado or coconut oil, and shea butter (pure- not scented). the baby bee one works REALLY well and fast on the really rough patches, the rest are all good though too.
