If honey is cooked in a recipe

Is it safe for kids under 2 to eat? I don't remember but I think I'm supposed to still avoid honey for Sam but I saw a chicken recipe with it that looks good

Re: If honey is cooked in a recipe

  • i think with honey there are 2 competing concerns...one is allergies, which cooking would not impact...the second is a specific kind of botulism, which while heat sensitive, its really difficult to kill...that said, i thought the age limit on honey was 1...
  • The age limit is 1.  I was at the pedi on Fri and asked if honey was still off-limits and she said it's fine after 1.

  • Ditto age 1. And S love chimichangas which we fry in honey butter.
  • After age 1 it's fine for kids.
  • Cooking will not kill spores of C. botulinum. Spores are like a cocoon.  They are not harmful to ingest in those with a mature immune system.  However, in babies, they can germinate into the enterotoxin that causes botulism due to their immature digestive systems.  My understanding  is that the age limit is age 1.

    i agree!

  • oops... my changa reply disappeared. ugh

Basically we fry both sides of a burrito sized tortilla in honey butter (just mix honey and butter so that it is still butter consistency). Then we fill it with re-fried beans and shredded cheese (a Mexican blend). Roll it like a burrito. Then place them all in a pyrex, cover with cheese and bake at 350 for 20 minutes. (We don't actually preheat. Basically you want to melt the cheese.

We serve with rice and sour cream.

It's probably not really all that healthy but it's a vegetarian break from the pasta MH eats. lol

i'd take the basics but need to change the filling. i am the sole bean eater in my house....chicken and cheese would work for the other three!

My sister makes it with chicken. Not sure if she replaces the beans or supplements a bit.
