What to take for migraines?

I've been getting awful headaches lately that make me nauseous. I tried generic Excedrin (the real stuff is recalled) but its not helping. Any other suggestions? I'll probably get to a dr at some point in my life. Thanks!

Re: What to take for migraines?

  • if excedrine isn't working (the generic is just as good as the brand... and the "migraine formula" is the exact same thing as the regular)...

you can take a few advil - i need 4 (which is Rx strength) and put an ice pack on your  head.

If that isn't working - you really need an Rx triptan med like Relpax, Imitrex, etc.

hope you feel better. I get migraines almost daily lately and am going to get back on an preventitive med, or possibly get botox for it... migraines are hell.

  • I suffered for years before I got Rx meds. I tried Imitrex (the only brand with a generic) and it made me feel horrible, like I got hit by a truck and had the flu. Every muscle hurt, even my eye lids. Apparently that's a common reaction. I had to have my doctor call in an exception for me to get Maxalt, which is expensive as hell on my plan but doesn't cause the same reaction.
  • Excedrin normally does it for me. Sometimes I have to add an additional soda in there.

A warm wet washcloth over my eyes and temples helps too. As does a hot bath.

If all else fails I get Imitrex from the doc.

I agree.  One of my techniques was to take 3-4 advil and drink a coke (or other caffeinated beverage).  If that doesn't work I also have prescription Imitrex.   Not everyone has success with caffeine though.  Some people report that it can make it worse.

Cool compresses on your head may help.  Hydrating may help.  A dark, quiet room may help.  Sometimes a warm shower/bath (to relax muscles) will help.

But if it's something you deal with more than once a month or if it's really interrupting your life - definitely talk to a doctor.  Migraines suck!!!  Good luck!

  • Thanks girls. I almost bought "Advil for migraines" and noticed it looked exactly like regular advil. I may have to eventually get to a dr for some good drugs. It doesnt help being slaved around by 2 3 year olds all day!

  • something else to try and do is track when they occur. for me it is the day before and on and off the week of my period. i now take excedrin migraine at the slightest start of a headache around that time. if i can stay ontop of the pain it is much more bearable than waiting until it is a full migraine.

also i wear sunglasses year round. i notice on bright sunny days i tend to get a migraine if i forget to where my sunglasses.

That's what I usually do. I notice for me I get them when the weather changes abruptly, perhaps something to do with the barometer, and also if I'm stressed.
