New here - Just curious how people "start over"

I'm normally on the Parenting board and somewhat on the Single Parents board.

My brief story: I'm in my late 30's and have 2 kids, a 19 year old son and a almost 5 year old daughter.  I've currently been seperated for almost a year and I am in the process of the divorce.  I was with my ex since 2001 and we seperated in February 2011.  There is a lot more to this story but those are the basics.

So curious, how did everyone start over?  It's been a year since the seperation and I'm starting to feel like I'd like to move on.  Any advice?

A strong word around here is to make sure you take time for yourself.  Don't do something b/c it's what society deems necessary. Don't do something just b/c your friends/family think it's what's best for you.  Do something b/c it seems RIGHT to you!

This times a million!!! Make sure you are fully healed and aware of your past mistakes before jumping into the dating scene (even casual dating). I was single for a long time. I got back into figuring out who I was. I joined new social groups, learned new hobbies and did some counseling. I really looked at my marriage as well as other past relationships to see why I was doing the things I was doing. GL to you!

    Welcome!

But I guess I don't really know what you mean? I felt like I was starting over once I moved into my own place and had pretty much cut contact with XH. The feeling of "starting over" came again once the divorce was legal/final. I just started living for myself again. Seeing friends a lot. Doing activities I loved. Volunteering.

What exactly is not happening in your life - or aren't you doing - that you would like to be happening or like to be doing?

  • I've been in counseling for the last year, dealing mostly with my marriage but also with some other relationships I've had over the years.  I've spent much of the last year focusing on myself and healing and on my kids.  I'm just now STARTING to feel like myself again and like I'm in a good place emotionally.

As far as my family and friends are concerned, they've seen what I've been through and encourage me to go forward slowly with anything and to do what I think is right.  I agree with this approach.

I have not moved but have done a lot of redecorating at my house.  I guess yeah, not that I'm looking to date but in a way I'm scared to so I'm just curious about other peoples experiences.  Since I'm scared, I know that I'm not ready and that I have more healing to do.
