Help with cat pee out of the box ...

Hi Ladies - I need help with my boy cat, Cody.

He has been peeing outside the litter box.  He doesn't pee anywhere else in the house, but outside his box.  I'm not sure why.  It'd be funny if it wasn't so gross and a pain to deal with.

I watched him do this on a few occasions.  He gets in the box, digs his hole and then will start to pee.  He lifts his butt as he's peeing and it goes over the edge.

I have bought one of those litter boxes with the lid and cover - won't use it.

I bought a big rubbermaid container and only fill half the box.  But there is still pee on the outside of the box.

His last check up came up clean ... no health issues (UTI / Stones /etc ...)

I'm just out of ideas on how to prevent him peeing on my floors and how to keep my floors clean.  I hate the way my house smells.  It's very frustrating.

Any advice would be appreciated!!

  • So he gets in the box but the pee doesn't make it in? Have you tried putting puppy pads or something outside the box to catch the pee? Have you tried a box with taller sides? Or maybe a covered box?

Second the taller sides, but no cover... My female cat did this alllllllllllll the time! Finally with the taller sides, it forces her to keep her butt in the cat box... even though she still hasn't figured out how to cover her poop---she just scratches the sides of the box...oh well, win some, lose some

  • Litter boxes sold in stores are too short and/or small for some cats. We make our own using large storage containers. Prior to this change we had a system on an office mat and trashbage that attached to the walll and went under the boxes with a line if litter at the base to absorb the urine. Much easier to clean. Or if your cat is standing tall he may not like the litter. We had issues when Tidy Cats changed their formula and it was a stronger scent.

Good point about the covered one. Some cats won't use them. We have had good luck with the Clever Cat box. It is expensive, but all of our cats will use it, and it is covered. They would not use the Buddha dome.

  • When I was at Lowes I walked down the cement aisle and they had a big plastic black bin there to mix cement in. It was only $5 so I bought it. And it worked great for me. My two males are big and when they squat the boxes weren't wide enough. So I think that may be something to try because if he can squat and get lower he may not go outside anymore.

You can get puppy pads that will hopefull absorb it and you won't have to worry about it being on the floor.

    Good luck!
