My parents' Pomeranian has been getting a lot of blood drawn. We recently found out that he might have a collapsed trachea later down the road. He's always had skin issues and has been fighting alapechia (sp?). Well he still has been coughing and wheezing, so my parents keep bringing him to the vet. Long story short he keeps getting his blood drawn, and a possible surgery has been mentioned. Yesterday the vet shaved his chest to draw blood, because his leg veins are getting harder and harder to find. Mom said he cried from getting the IV on his chest. And he has to get more blood drawn on Thursday. This just has me so depressed, I feel so horrible for him! I know they can't afford the surgery and don't think it would work, he's so tiny. I guess what I'm asking for is for you girls to keep him in your T&P's. That either they find out what is wrong, and he gets medicine, or he is put out of his misery. He has a normal appetite now, but is on a strictly bland diet. Sorry for rambling and if this is all over, I posted from my phone.
Update:
I talked to Mom again this morning. Apparently all the blood tests are being done because of his blood enzymes. They got f**ked up when he was on medicine for his coughing. He started having diahrea, and that's why my mom brought him back to the vet in the first place. She says tomorrow's blood test will be the final one, so fingers crossed it's nothing big, and he just has to live his life on meds.
Re: My family dog needs prayers- updated
My brother's dog is a purebred German Spitz (similar to a pomeranian) and her trachea collapses all the time when she's excited. She has never had surgery to resolve this, and SIL works at a vet clinic so she's had the best care possible. If the coughing isn't bothering the dog, and isn't causing any respiratory distress, then perhaps your parents should consider waiting a bit to see if the coughing resolves itself? Why all the blood tests? These can't be for the trachea, as an x-ray would tell them way more. Is it for the alopecia? Is it really causing enough concern to put him through all the vet visits at this point? I have a cat that has hair loss along her spine, and finally decided that this bothered me way more than it did her, so I decided to just let it go. We can't all be perfect looking, and she's beautiful anyway.
Here is a some info I found on collapsing tracheas in dogs: http://drbarchas.com/collapsing_trachea
My prayers are with you though, I know how hard it is to have a pet going through a health scare
I'm not sure, I just know what my mom tells me. I wish they would just stop already! =(
