s/o goodie bags

Re: s/o goodie bags

  • Your points are taken, but my son would LOVE a gift card!  I can think a bunch of items my son would want that are $5 or less.  My son is a huge fan of Magic Treehouse books- and they're only $4 a pop.  If I were to do gc's, that's all the kids would get, though.  I wouldn't fork out more $.  It would either be a gc or a bag of crappy toys, lol.

  • We haven't gotten a gift card in a goody bag so far. Our goody bags usually have a pencil, some stickers, maybe a notepad or something and a piece or two of candy. I don't think I've ever spent a whole $5 per goody bag.

I wouldn't mind a gift card, but it might not get used unless it's for somewhere I'm likely to head into during my usual shopping. A toy store gift card would likely end up used for a gift to the next party we're invited to.

I get gift items for wholesale so that's what goes in the goodie bag. This year it's harmonicas, wooden yo-yos, and wooden tops. I think it's costing $4 per bag. That's as expensive as I go.

Wait. So you give out goodie bags, but when you get them at parties, you throw it out before your kid even gets to see it? Lol. That's funny.

Yes. I give out goodie bags because it seems most people expect/want them. And at the place I'm having it at this time, goodie bags come with the cost. I just can't give out just what's in them because I just can't. The toys I'm giving out sell retail for 3x higher than what I pay for them so I can rationalize it because they're really good quality. It's an "old time" toy company. But, most people don't have that option- I've seen what's inside them a few times enough to know that candy and crap are generally in them. I don't want to be bothered so they go in the garbage rather than have a fit over keeping what's inside.

She got one for Christmas from her OT and was soooo excited. I guess my kid is the freak...she "gets" and likes GC.

  • liz, i have to thank you for this post.  i have been laughing all afternoon.  i had no idea people took goodie bags (or their recipients) so seriously.  this is awesome.

really? really. You really had no idea that people on the nest took (something child related) so seriously? Really. People on the nest.... and something to do with their kids. Okee then.

Word.  I was just going to write this.  It's only on the nest that people would kvetch about these things.  If a goodie bag is the only thing worth complaining about in your universe, consider yourself charmed.  = )

  • Well since I am the only one who suggested a GC in the post below I guess you are referring to me ...

I def did NOT hear about this for the first time from the Nest ... this is not a Nest thing, for me at least.

I can understand how you would think it is "ridiculous" to give a GC .... I just think for all the money spent on "goodie bags" I would rather my kid have a BOOK from B&N or a freaking ice cream cone. I am not talking about a 50$ GC to TRU or something like that ... THAT would be ridiculous to me. I am talking 3-5$ depending on where it was to.

I am not getting the whole assigning a price tag to the items in a goody bag though ... why would giving a GC indicate that??

After reading the responses I think many parents do NOT like the idea of getting/giving a gift card, which is totally fine ... to each their own. I still think it is a cute idea and I would rather that then a bunch of little toys that will just get lost in the sauce at my house ...

Glad I made you laugh though ;)

  • I'd much rather a gift card than a bag full of candy and penny toys that are either going to get lost, break or clutter up my living room even more than it is. I've never given them but we received one to Friendly's at a party last year and I thought it was the best thing ever. Mia was psyched to go get ice cream and I was psyched to not step on any stupid little toys later. I certainly never thought "Who the f*ck do those people think they are? Letting me know they spent $5 per kid on a goodie item???".

Nope...I did too..and I even gave them out at DD's last birthday party!!! The horror!

Yet another reason why I am glad my IRL friends are absolutely nothing like the people on this board.

I have IRL friends who are cuckoo over what to put into a goodie bag. It's a type-A thing- It's not just nest-wide obsession. I don't care what's in it. I actually wouldn't mind a gc and now I'll be looking in the bag thinking something like that might be in there. I'm obviously going to the wrong parties. My goodie-bag criteria for what I give is less about cost or theme and more about what won't get choked on, hopefully won't give lead poisoning, or annoy the parents.

    This.

And, I give them out as favors. LOVE the idea. Makes it SO EASY for me as well. I don't have to put together goodie bags for 20+ kids........

And I'm like TSD - pretty much every goodie bag goes in the trash. I hate goodie bags. It's always full of cheaper crap that breaks easily, only one of my kids gets one (then there is the "sharing" issue), on and on.

  • This is one of those posts where you have to wonder why people care so much about such trivial things. I mean who WTF cares what people put in heir favor bags. If you find it so offensive just through it out. And exactly how is it rude?!! Boggles the brain. And FTR I have never given that in a bag but still, come on!
  • V, I wasn't talking about the GCs when I said I was laughing. I was talking about this post and the crazily ruffled feathers. THAT made me LMAO.

  • I would welcome the mcdonalds gift card! At least we wld use it
  • Bella never got one, but I never gave it much thought...can't say I think it's lame or anything.  I'm sure she'd be happy to go shopping if she did get one.

I didn't really mean for the guests. I meant more to the parents that now throw a party for the same group. This month we've had 3 parties for the exact same group of kids. When the excepted norm for gift bags is more in the $2 or $3 range it seems a bit rude to assign a $10+  price to them in a way that it's obvious you spent $200 just on the bags, it seems a bit like an attempt to one up the other parents.

  • People always have something to say here.  If you give people candy, they hate it because their kids cry when they can't have it, they don't like tchotchkes, gift cards are pretentious...... There will always be something wrong with every suggestion.  I can't wait to give kids each their own puppy and a handful of Pixy Stix.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd be stoked to get one-upped if it's coming in the form of a gc for a good dollar. I guess it depends on how much you care about keeping up with the joneses and what age group we're talking. Ethan is going to be 3 in a week & doesn't know a quarter from a five dollar bill. In fact, he'd rather have a quarter to put in Chalkie right now than the bill because the quarter makes noise. So, if someone wants to one-up me with a $5-$10 gift card to somewhere useable, go for it. We're in. And you're still getting yo-yo's, tops, and harmonicas from us.
