We have used a contractor a few times over the past 5 years for various jobs. We are never 100% thrilled with his work. It has improved since he has gotten more established and he uses better guys then he used too, which is why we kept using him. He is also a really nice guy
SO.....4 1/2 years ago he did a bathroom remodel right before my son was born (like 3 weeks)
It was a total shower re-tile. While doing the tile, the tile guy dumped the old grout water down the shower drain. It was slowly draining, he brought it to my attention when he did it, but since it eventually drained we let it go and figured it was OK. Well since then the shower never really drained right, always really slow, and got clogged all the time. But we had a new baby and just never dealt with it, and I got blamed for losing hair and shower scum blocking it up.
fast forward to this past month. It was horrible, we couldnt get it unclogged and you would stand in water and it would take about 15 minutes for it to drain out after your shower.
Called the plumber......and I know you know where this is going. Long story short they just cut 2 wholes in my ceiling below the shower to replace the pipe and the entire pipe is closed up with grout except for about 1/2 an inch.
So WWYD? Would you address it with the contractor and to what extent? Having him pay for the pipe repairs, having him fix the ceiling at the very least? Let it go?
Re: WWYD in this situation RE: Contractor
i think you can call him and tell him what the guy did but not saying something at the time was not very smart. if someone poured grout down my drain there's no way i would have let that go, especially since grout a) likes to settle, and b) dries at first opportunity. you'll probably end up eating the repairs to the plumber but yes, call him and at least suggest that he's responsible for repairing your ceiling.
keep the pipe to show him what the guy did.
I do have the pipe and its crazy that we didnt address the issue sooner, we just thought it was the way the shower was since everything in this house tends to suck because the guy that built it sucked.
I agree that I should have dealt with it at the time, BUT what do I know about grout? The tile guy showed me and the contractor never really addressed it with me, said it was draining OK---slight backstory that might matter.....I couldnt be in my house for 2 weeks while they were doing this project because they used some kind of spray insulation and it stunk up the house so bad I had to move out until the smell went away. So I would put my mask on and run and in the house for like 5 minutes a day for an update (and to grab clothes) and he told me about it, and then I ran back out the door, and I recall the contractor saying that since it drained still it must have drained out fine.
this, since you said OK its approved by you so you really don't have recourse. Stinks but thats how I would see it.
