Paula Deen secretly diabetic

So turns out she was diagnosed 3 years ago with Type 2 diabetes.  She announced today and this month is appearing in her diabetic medication provider's ads and as their new spokesperson.

Re: Paula Deen secretly diabetic

  • She was so weird on the Today Show.  You could tell she was following very specific instructions from her handler's/PR people.
  • Yes, she was very strange on there today, and kept denying it had nothing to do with portions control.

Maybe she wouldn't have gotten it if she didn't make things like this:

Yes she was very weird on the show this morning. I think it is interesting she kept it a secret for 3 years though. Clearly an image thing IMO to keep her brand - or what she is known for, butter and frying - in tact I suppose. But she did say this morning everything in moderation - I'm your cook not your doctor and I don't eat this stuff all the time....

  • Obviously, not a big shock.  I didn't get to see her on Today, but when they kept cutting to her before she did the interview she seemed uncomfortable.  Mayhaps she ought to get on board with Bobby Deens new diet plan (I think he has a new show, actually).

It was definitely an image thing to hide it.   She did make a good point that when you see her eating/cooking like that - it's 30 out of 365 days and it's about moderation which it is.  Shame she had to hide it for so long though.

  • I haven't really ever followed her, but I hope in addition to her being the medication's spokesperson, she starts doing some cooking that promotes low carb/healthy meals.

Diabetes needs as many spokespeople as possible to get changes to occur in america's concious, in restaurants, food manufacturing, etc. similar to the gluten-free movement. It would be nice to not have to pay extra for a side of veggies or a salad in a restaurant instead of fries (don't get me wrong, I love fries, but some people can't eat them, and shouldn't have to pay for it).

  • I was just sorry to see her be so defensive instead of embracing change like Graham Kerr did.  Remember he was the Galloping Gourmet cooking a la Julia Child with butter, cream, brandy, the works and then after health problems with his family, switched to and embraced low-fat cooking and was a bigger success than before.  Would be a great thing to introduce recipes in her shows that are low-fat or low-sugar.

I am loving his show - he takes recipes that she has made on her shows and gives them a healthy spin!  I think she was on the first episode sampling his versions, not sure if that is going to be an every episode thing, though.  I think it is a really limited run, only like 4 episodes or something, but I hope it gets picked up for more.

  • I don't think it's surprising, but I do think it's sad it was hidden for so long.  I'm pretty sure her son has a new show devoted to lightening up his mom's recipes.

  • I think it's really sad.  But I do hope that she's able to help her fans learn about healthy eating...

I'll have to keep a look out for that one - I was interested since he's done some healthier cooking on her show.
