Suggestions on how to find a therapist?

I have 'started over' and really don't have any unresolved issues from my former relationship w/my EXH, however, I am new to my area and I feel as though I need to talk to a therapist to address some family/work/relationship issues that I have had for some time. I am sure that some of these issues ultimatley lead to the demise of my first marriage and now that I am truly with "the one", I want to make sure that I am equipped to deal with situations are they arise. I virtually know no one in my city besides my DH and my company is small so we don't offer an EAP.  Does anyone have any ideas besides just picking a name out of my insurance providers coverage list?

Re: Suggestions on how to find a therapist?

  • Find a place that offers an "in-take" session. During the in-take, you normally will fill out a questionnaire that covers a large area. After that, you will speak with someone who will take extensive notes of your particular situation. Once the in-take is completed, the head psychologist/psychiatrist/therapist will review your information and "match" you with a therapist most suited for you for your next session.

  • I called a list from my providers website, asked if they were accepting new patients and try to establish over the phone if it would be a good match (did they listen or hurry me off, we're they responsive, we're her kids creaming in the background etc) and made an appt. took 3 to find the right match.
