What age would you recommend starting dance classes? Bean is a dancing/singing/instrument playing fool. And I swear on my life she is tap dancing. OR at least copying it from something she saw somewhere. Ha.

Re: Jen12

  • Okay, let's try again...
Classes typically start around 2 1/2-3 years old. At that age they should be focused more on creative movement rather than learning actual dance steps. The teacher may teach them a few basic steps, but it shouldn't be too formal. Emphasis should be more on motor movements (jumping, skipping, galloping, hopping), following direction (up, down, big, small, taking turns) & imagination. Often times they will have props (scarves, magic wands, hula hoops).
Classes typically start in September & run through May. Some schools will have these little one perform at the end of the year recital. Others feel they're too young. I think they are great & the audience loves to see this age on stage, regardless of if they do what they're supposed to or not. They're just adorable.
Some places will have classes that run in sessions. You would just need to call around to see if they are starting any new classes soon. Many schools have summer classes or 'camps' over school vacation. That's a good way to try it out & see if Bean likes it. The YMCA often offers classes like this, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
If you find a place that you like, I would be happy to check it out for you. I can tell a lot about the school based on their website. Or I could give them a call & ask them the tough questions :-)
If you do sign Bean up, make sure to take tons of pictures. There's nothing cuter than a baby ballerina!
