Jackson was evaluated for EI at 18 months. He tested:
25% in Fine Motor Skills
33 % in Expressive Communication
25% in Receptive Communication
25% in Adaptive/Self-help skills
They said he was at a 10 month olds level for expressive communication and a 13 month old level for receptive communication. Then they said that they will only give him 1 hour a week of developmental intervention and that's it. Shouldn't he get speech therapy? I don't feel like he is getting enough services.
Re: I have an EI question.
Grayson had 3 areas he was 25% in... and he was offered 1 hour speech and 1 hour DI each week - and this was before he was 2yo - so yeah, that just doesn't seem right. (his initial eval was at 18mo)
We ended up going private for speech anyway b/c our insurance will pay for it. Find out what your insurance will cover b/c you might find it's cheaper that way... for us would have beeen $65/hour with EI... but was free with my insurance.
I think that's not a lot considering the delays. Aaron started (at age 2 exactly) with 2 hours of DI and 1 hour of ST and he was behind as follows, and it's a bit differently defined.
33% in Communication, Speech & Language
33% in Social/Emotional Development
25% in Cognitive Ability
And the thing is, he was re-evaluated with a developmental pediatrician and he is at age level (and scattering above) for Cognitive Ability and Receptive Language (is still at least 25% behind in Expressive) and his Social/Emotional Development is at or near age level now that he's been in daycare 3 mornings per week.
However, he's behind 33% in gross motor (was at 25% six months ago) and 25% in Adaptive/Self Help Skills so my EI team is adding services and our review meeting is on Friday. We're likely adding OT with PT supervision.
So my long-winded reply is that you should speak to your coordinator about feeling 1 hour of DI per week isn't enough. Press for at least 2 hours and/or 1 hour of speech. The DI really helped Aaron more than the speech at first. But now the focus is more on the ST as both therapists are working together and come from the same agency/know each other well.
