Please tell me I'm making the right choice....

This is so difficult, can someone give me an outside point of view?  My dog is almost 15, she is a mastiff...so this is REALLY old for this big of a dog. I got her when she was 6 weeks old. But, despite all of my wishing and efforts, she steadily going down hill for the last few months and really badly the last week. She can't get up without assistance and can't sit or lay down without assistance (if we don't help, she just falls). She has almost no teeth so can't have her chewies any more. She is almost completely blind and deaf.  And for the last couple of days she has been having these weird episodes where she is really frantic, whining, trying to get up, muscles rigid, hot, and panting. We give her valerian like the vet suggested and aspirin, but she just is getting worse and worse.  I am thinking it is time to put her to sleep, am I wrong? I hate seeing her like this, as hard is it is for me to think about life without my girl.

Re: Please tell me I'm making the right choice....

  • I'm so sorry Sad

The only thing bad about dogs is that they just don't live as long as we need them to. You have given your dog a good life, 15 years! Wow! My grandparents' mastiffs died before they were 11!

I can only comment by what I read on your post, but it does sound like she is ready to say good bye.

    I'm so sorry.

  • I usually try not to say what I would do since every situation is different and you don't really know how you'll feel until you're in that spot yourself with your beloved pet.

But all that said, it sounds like her quality of life if really deteriorating quickly. As long as you keep her best interests at heart, I don't think you can make a "wrong" decision.

This exactly. I'm so sorry that you're going through this.

  • I agree with PPs. This decision is a very personal one. It's hard to explain, but oftentimes, you really just know when your pet is ready to go.

15 years is incredible for a Mastiff. She's obviously had a wonderful life with you. Whatever you decide to do, decide from your heart, and it will be the right choice.

  • I have never regretted putting a dog to sleep too early vs. waiting too long and wishing I had done it sooner.

I agree with MMP.  These are my sentiments exactly.  I watched a dog of ours die from cancer and it was so hard.  I felt like I failed her.  So when our cat had cancer and it was clear that he was "ready to go", we made the difficult choice.  I am sad he is gone (always will be), but I know we did right by him.  There are no regrets when there is nothing more you can do to help them.

So sorry you are going through this :-(

  • I am so sorry. I was in your shoes this time last year. It was the hardest decision of my life but i knew it was time in my head but my heart fought the entire way. But she had that look in her eyes and it broke my heart. Hugs to you.

I have said this before but the biggest comfort to me was knowing that she was loved from the time  we got her at 8 weeks until we had to let her go 13 years later.

  • I'm so sorry you have to go through this. No one can give you a yes or no. It's a very personal decision. You know best after 15 wonderful years, what your companion needs. Remember that quality of life is a lot more important that quantity... but it's never easy...

  • I'm so sorry you are having to make such a tough choice. My thoughts are with you and your sweet girl.

  • I'm sorry, I had to make the same decision last year. No one can tell you what to do, but someone I respect told me that it was always important to her to let her dogs go while they still had some dignity. It helped me in making my own decision.
  • I am a lurker here, but I just had to comment.

I am so terribly sorry.  We have just gone through this exact scenario over the last few days.  It was an agonizing decision but after seeing how much mental anguish our dear boy was experiencing, we made the choice to let him go today.  He could no longer walk, eat, drink, or go to the bathroom on his own.We had to support him completely.  He had a seizure on Friday and things have been going down steadily.  What helped me  make this decision was that we based it on what we thought our boy would want, on what was best for him, and not for what was best for DH and me.  We knew it was time to give our boy peace. There are no words to express how much pain we have today for ourselves, but we are so happy he is now running and playing at the Rainbow Bridge. We miss him.

    Well said.

It is so hard to make the decision.   Sometimes it is the kindest, most selfless decision you can make for your wonderful old friend.  Hugs. I am so very sorry.

  • I'm so sorry you are going through this...I could never say for sure 'oh yes, it is time' because you will know. It sounds like it is coming soon, though. I have been through it and it never gets easier. (((HUGS)))

I am going through something similar with my collie, and I know how tough it is to watch your furry family member deteriorate.
