Please excuse my ignorance...

But what the hell is all this SOPA and PIPA stuff? Facebook is against it, and so is the oatmeal (these are my sources, aren't they dependable?), and honestly is confuses the hell out of me...

From what I understand, it's legislation that the American government is trying to pass to get rid of piracy by blocking certain sites and the search engines that link them... I honestly don't see the point when the internet is world wide and they can only censor what is done by Americans, so there would be more than enough ways to get around these laws.

Someone please tell me if I'm missing the point...

Re: Please excuse my ignorance...

  • I'm not entirely sure to be honest. I do think it has something to do with censorship to protect from people/ sytems from stealing your information and tracking you. But I'm not sure..
  • What people are most up in arms about is because things like Pinterest would cease to exist because that would be 'taking' something from another website without authorization.  I believe its basic purpose is good, but they've just taken it too far to the point where you couldn't use the internet for anything at all.

  • Oh okay. I can understand why people are so upset now. That would really suck. I'm sure there will be enough people and companies against it to stop it.

  • It's basically your internet company putting blocks on your computer from websites that your government doesn't think are legit.

  • The reason I'm against it is because the way the legislation is set up makes it so that any corporation can say "this website is stealing our stuff" or "that blogger/website/tumblr account is infringing on our profits" and without any kind of trial or lawsuit, the government can step in and block the site.

Even though they can only block it for Americans, it would make online business ventures much more risky so many people would cease to put their items up for sale. When sites don't have the funds to keep going due to investors unwilling to take the risk, then everyone in every country has to deal with the issue. Sites like Etsy could fold because of that.

Half.com and online textbook discount stores (or even the used section of Amazon) could be blocked due to the fact that they infringe upon the profits of corporations.

Google, Facebook and the like are all up in arms because they could be blocked (and forced to shut down due to lack of revenue from ad traffic) just for linking to a post that has "questionable content".

It's basically a bunch of corporate bullshit.

  • I have no clue what I'm talking about so don't listen to me...ha!
