I'm about to breakdown

DH's company just announced that they are no longer paying for dependent healthcare. We havn't had to pay anything minthly for 4 years. We don't have the money to pay for it but can't afford to go without. We are already cutting back and were trying to save money to ttc at some point this year and now there is no way we can afford to. My job ended last month so my income is gone and we just found out our auto insurance is almost doubling because of my accident. So far this year sucks. It was supposed to get better.

Re: I'm about to breakdown

  • That sucks!  I am so sorry.  Anyway that G might qualify for CHP+?  At least if you can get her covered that way you might have a bit more $ to find private insurance for yourself.  Good luck and I'm sorry that you are in this situation!!!
no identifiable siggy pictures anymore, thanks a lot stupid nest!
  • yikes, I'm so sorry L.  Can you look into Kaiser?  When I was between jobs I went there and it was reasonable as anything I could find.  Best wishes for things to turn around.

  • It's really sad that his company didn't consider other options - going from not having to pay anything for dependent coverage to not covering dependents at all is a significant change. They are really taking a gamble assuming that their best workers have spouses who have access to coverage elsewhere. Not a good retention tool when you don't cover the kids!

Hope you are able to find something for yourself and your dD!

  • I'm so sorry! That stinks!!!!

  • Oh no!  I'm so sorry.  :(
  • Well I looked over the papers DH got and it looks like they do have coverage but it is expensive. Especially going from not paying anything. I will probably call CHPP tomorrow and see if G is eligible. I have a feeling DH makes too much. Thanks.

  • Wow, that is a big change.

Do they have any other plans you could do that would be cheaper monthly?

DH's company doesn't pay for dependents, so we paid over $900/month last year for the Aetna plan.  We switched to the UHC HSA plan this year so it went down to about $600.  Still a big chunk of the budget, but that $3600 a year savings should make a big difference for our finances.

  • Ugh, I swear health insurance is just one of those things that is always such a hassle to deal with. I'm in your shoes right now too...it just sucks.

They have 2 plans our old plan and a basic plan if DH wants our old plan he has to pay $20, they will pay for his basic. For dependants the premium (old plan) is $50 more than the basic.

The thing that really gets me is DH asked the HR person atleast 6 times in nov/dec if they were changing so we could plan because we are on a fixed income and because she was really pushing everyone to get an HSA. We were told oh nothing is going to change and put money into the HSA to pay our previous deductable (which was lower) now we cannot change the money put into it or request for them to stop putting money in. We out in enough to cover our family deductable, which if G and I don't get on the insurance will go to waste because DH has never even touched a deductable im the 9 years I have known him.

We will probably just put G on CHPP (if possible) and not get me any coverage until we can afford it.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this now. Check out the brokers out there - I think we looked at ehealthinsurance.com. I was surprised, they actually had plans that were comparable to my (admittedly crappy) group plan for about the same as we were paying. You might be able to find something for you & G that is reasonable. We're in the midst of trying to figure out the self-insurance stuff too, and it's such a pain. It makes socialized medicine look so nice!

  • I'm so sorry, insurance dealings suck.  I hope you are able to find something great for you & G that isn't too expensive.

  • Just a thought, State Farm has temporary health insurance.  I used it when I graduated from college after I got bumped off my parents' insurance.  I think it was something like $90/month, not super cheap but better than ending up in an accident or something and owing tons.

  • Ditto Ziggy- if you can I'd look for a plan that would cover you in case of a catastrophic emergency if nothing else.  My friend found one that would cover her for emergencies.  (it didn't cover pre-existing conditions though). Ehealthinsurance.com was really helpful.
