if you shop at costco/Bjs how do you split up your meat?

do you wrap it in anything special- I usually do not freeze a lot of meat since I always seem to wind up with freezer burn - and I am tired of it- I usually just throw meat in a freezer ziplock- but that is obviously not working-  thanks!

  • Invest in a vacuum sealer!  Seriously, it is one of my favorite kitchen appliances.  I buy family size packs of meat, break them down, and vacuum seal into meal size portions.  No freezer burn. Fresh as can be!!

  • we usually split it up into 1-lb packs and put in freezer ziplocs in the freezer. maybe try wrapping in freezer paper and then putting in the ziplocs? i've done that before, too.

  • I put mine in 1 lb packs as well & then I put them in quart size freezer bags & then put a couple of those bags together in a freezer gallon size bag  & I never get freezer burn.

  • I put it in 1lb packs and put them in freezer bags.  I make sure I squeeze out as much air as possible.  For the ground meat I flatten it out in the bag, this way unfreezing is easy and no air in the bag to prevent freezer burn.

  • I completely agree with the vaccuum sealer suggestion.  I love ours!
  • I agree about the vacuum sealer.  Sometimes though I'm out of bags and I wrap things as tightly as possible in saran wrap then foil, that's how my mom always did it & I've never had anything get freezer burn.

  • i wrap it tightly in plastic wrap, whatever i'd use in a single time goes in one "wrap" then i put them in a big freezer bag, or multiple freezer bags, whatever.  air is what gets you, so you want to have something against all sides of the meat, and then squeeze out as much air as you can. if i can't get it all out, i close it almost all the way, put a straw in, and suck it flat. it's quite a vision. but i don't really want a big food-saver to find a place for.
  • agree get a vacuum sealer soooooo worth it for costcco
  • I bought my parents a food saver a few years ago and they've yet to use it.  I'm ready to swipe it.

I divide and trim it (if necessary), wrap in foil, portion out and store in freezer bags.

  • I wrap meal sized portions in tin foil and then put 3-4 tin foil packages in a freezer ziplock.

  • I separate it 1lb portions, wrap in non-stick foil and then place it in freezer bags
