Trader Joe's fans - is it really coming?!

I know there have been a lot of rumors in the past, so I will believe it when I see it, but this sounds promising.

Re: Trader Joe's fans - is it really coming?!

  • That looks promising, but I doubt I will drive to boulder just for TJ's (though we do drive through on our way to/from Estes...)

  • I would totally drive there to stock up!
  • I would absolutely drive there for it! Then again, we usually go up there at least 6 times a year for CU games.
  • What's so great about Trader Joes?

I don't know.  the one time I went in CA I was not a fan.  slim selection on most items and I'd rather go to Sunflower.

  • OMG, I hope I'm not just getting my hopes up and that it really happens!!!   And luckily for me, 29th Street mall is close and easy for me to get to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am soooo excited.  I miss so many things there....lavender laundry soap, doggy treats, pumpkin waffle mix, frozen pastry puffs and mahi mahi, dark chocolate salted caramels (seasonal), and I could go on and on....lol!

As I am typing this 9News is reporting on it, saying TJ's filed to register its name with the secretary of state!   woohoo!

  • One of my customers told me that her business partner saw the employee break room at the TJ in Santa Fe and that Denver was on the list for new stores.  And I think it was MamaMade who said someone she knows heard the cashier at TJ in Santa Fe talking about moving to Denver to open up the store here.

The only reason I'm not a fan of 29th St. in Boulder is that parking will be an uber cluster.

  • When I was in grad school in CA, I loved TJ's because of all the cheap-but-decent wines. I don't recall much about their food -- if that tells you anything!

But I thought that a big part of the reason that they weren't doing business in CO was because they couldn't sell regular wine/liquor as a grocery store, and it's a large part of their profits. That hasn't changed, so it makes me wonder a little bit what their set-up will be. Like maybe if they would have a TJ's wine store next to the grocery store or something? Who knows.

  • Oh, I just had a sad thought.  I know the rules here in CO for selling alcohol are a bit, um, weird.  So would that mean they wouldn't sell their wonderful 3 buck Chuck and all of their other wonderful wine????

On a side note: I am still enjoying my TJ's candy cane green tea, dark chocolate salted caramels, and my lavender dryer bags thanks to my friends in Phoenix sending me Christmas care packages!!!

  • Whoohoo!!!! That would be awesome! The only place I can guess in 29th street would be the old Borders. You would just park underground there. Nothing else is empty that would even be remotely big enough.

I think the laws changed?  There are grocery stores that sell booze (like the Target in Glendale and there's a Kings that sells booze too.)  I always thought that the liquor reason wasn't really accurate because they have stores where there are more strict laws (like no sales of alcohol at all.)   Or maybe they'll have a separate entrance for the booze areas a la Costco?

  • It looks like we will be in Boulder one/ month when they open:-)

  • The news report that DH and I saw said that it looks like there will be 3 locations to start, and they don't know where they are but it looks like one will be in Boulder.

I'm sooooo hoping one will be somewhere south!!

I was also worried about the liquor laws. I think only ONE Target and ONE King Soopers can have liquor? IDK, but I thought I heard that somewhere.

I know the Sunday laws changed for liquor stores, but I thought the 3.2 alcohol law was still in place for grocery stores -- where they can only sell 3.2 alcohol.

I did some googling, and as of 2011, restaurants are now allowed to sell light beers that fall into the 3.2-beer range, but I can't find anything about whether grocery stores can now sell full-strength alcohol.

I'm pretty sure the law says each company can own only one liquor store.  That is why there is only one Target and one King Soopers that have it.  I think the Costco liquor stores are independently owned, except for the Littleton which is owned by Costco and also sells the Costco brand liquors

  • Oh, I was just lamenting that I wish we had one for the little snack packs of nuts.  Woohoo!!  And if you have not had them, get a tub of the chocolate chip oatmeal cookies -- I know it's not listed but am pretty sure one of the ingredients is crack because they are THAT addictive.

  • I read somewhere recently that in other states with similar laws and Trader Joe's, they just have two storefronts right next to each other.  One with the food, one with the beer/wine/liquor. Also, I guess some stores just don't sell the alcohol at all.

Ah, that would make sense. I thought there was a single-store component that came in somewhere. I know the SuperTarget and the KS by my house both sell beer, but it's the 3.2 stuff for sure. I always have to remind my parents when they come not to buy the grocery-store beer!

  • The grocery store liquor problem is that liquor stores can't be franchised.  Costco gets around this by having the liquor store separate and independently owned/operated

  • I think the law in CO is that 1 location of each chain can carry full strength beer & liquor. So it seems plausible the 1st TJs would sell it. Not that I'd be inclined to go tBoulder for a grocery store. Yeah, I'd like to check one out, but not that far away. Plus driving in Boulder makes my blood boil.
  • You guys can all come visit me! Or maybe I can go into business shopping for everyone & dropping off your TJ's fix :) I won't lie, I'm SUPER excited it's coming to Boulder, especially after the drive to IKEA.

  • I really hope it's true! I also highly doubt the liquor laws are the reason they haven't come to Colorado sooner. I know that in the 2 stores I went to in Massachusetts they didn't sell alcohol.
