Recommend an off-camera flash

I am heading to Camera Co-Op tomorrow to get a new off-camera flash. I know they'll be very informative, but I would like to have a couple recs from the pro and hobby photographers on here.

Basically, I want to be able to take better pictures of people in a variety of social situations. Any recs?

Re: Recommend an off-camera flash

  • What kind of camera is it going on?

You probably want to ask for a hotshoe flash.  "off camera flash" is a whole other ball of wax... That's where you actually have a flash separate from the camera, and use a radio slave or intricate camera settings to make it flash.

You probably need to go with a flash that's the same brand as your camera, so they can "talk" to one another.  Manual flash settings are not something you want to have to deal with.

  • Speedlite (I think Canon).

My MIL bought me a less expensive one for Christmas to play around with before I plunge for a Speedlite. If you already KNOW you want one, probably better to drop the dough on what you really want.  I just kind of wanted to play with one, so I got one that was around $120.  Still haven't taken it out of the box, so probably a good thing that I didn't get a $$$.

  • ^^ Canon has 2 speedlites. the 430 EX II & the 580 EX II. You'll likely not need more than the 430, but the 580 has a built in bounce card & more power (and a heavier price tag).

I was there about 2 weeks ago, and they had some used older canon flashes that might get the job done too.

This is of course assuming you have a canon...you didnt say :)

If you dont mind off brand's...Sigma & Metz both make a flash also.

  • Sorry, guys. It was late and I was trying to whip off this question before I crawled in to bed.

I have a Nikon. Good advice to stick with the same brand but nice to have a couple of off brand names to throw around.

Jax- thank for clarifying what I am looking for, too. This is primarily why I asked. I don't want to go in looking like I know absolutely nothing, even if that is the case!

  • I have the Nikon SB-400 and it is fantastic.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • There's a little tiny one (might be the sb-400?) that's great.  It's also only about $120.

I got the SB-700 and I am already in love. I took 5-6 pics of the boys with the old camera flash and then with the new flash. WORLD of difference!

Now just wait until I take Jax's dSLR class!

  • Try pointing the flash up to the ceiling!

Yes! That's what I've been doing. Unlike with my camera, I've actually read the booklet for the flash (well, most of it) and there is a little photo guide that says "do X with the flash for Y result." So far so good!

I also got a new lens and am having fun playing with the combos.

  • A hot-shoe flash? If so, then Jeff said get the one made to go with your camera.
